Notes: [Auszug] THE development of the theory of atomic constitution has made measurements of the intensity of lines in X-ray spectra very important. Estimates of relative intensities of X-ray lines have hitherto been attempted by means either of the ionisation chamber or the photographic plate. Owing, ...

Notes: [Auszug] WHEN favourably situated, a person may see rings of coloured light round the shadow of his own head, as cast upon a neighbouring fog-bank or cloud. These coloured rings or glories, as they are called, have been explained by previous writers as merely coronas due to particles near the surface of ...

Notes: [Auszug] ON the hypothesis of the existence of ‘free electrons’ in metals, Drude, Lorentz, and recently Sommerfeld have explained the Wiedemann and Franz law, namely, that the ratio of the thermal and electrical conductivity is the same for all metals, and is proportional to the absolute temperature. In ...

Notes: [Auszug] RECENTLY Nuttall (Phys. Rev., 31; 1928) has examined the X-ray absorption spectra of simple compounds like potassium chloride and found six absorption edges (designated as A, B, C, D, E and F) both for potassium and chlorine atoms, all of which lie on the short wave-length side of the ...

Notes: [Auszug] IN continuation of my previous notes in NATURE (May 17 and June 7, 1930), I have further observed the following lines: The figures in the bracket denote the values of vjR. The values of the Ka radiations (in v/B) of carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen are 20-4, 28-7, and 38-3 respectively ...

Notes: [Auszug] INVESTIGATIONS have been made by various workers to determine the energy levels of the outer shells of the atom by bombarding it with cathode particles of definite velocity and measuring the photoelectric current due to the radiation impinging on a metallic plate. Keeping the cathode current ...
