    Notes: The resistance-capacitance electrical analogue is used to analyse the time variant behaviour of aquifers which change between the confined and unconfined states. This is achieved using a field effect transistor as a switch which automatically operates as the water table crosses the top of the aquifer.The significance of this change for a particular limestone aquifer is described. In addition a thorough examination is made of the changes to the pumping test time-drawdown curves when an aquifer, which is initially confined, becomes unconfined. If standard methods are used for this problem, erroneous results will be obtained for the transmissibility and the storage coefficients.

    Notes: The simulation of the conjunctive use of a surface reservoir and a limestone aquifer is described. The potential yields from each of the sources are of the same order. An important feature of the aquifer is that if the pumpage is reduced, much of the excess water is lost through springs. Five different operating policies are considered which determine whether pumpage should be taken from the reservoir or aquifer. The total safe yields for the historic period 1961–1977 are estimated for each policy and their relative advantages and disadvantages are discussed. The simulation is also carried out for 100 years of generated data to discover the long term consequences.

    Notes: The extensive pumping of an aquifer to remove a significant proportion of the stored water is considered. A numerical method is described which permits the analysis of radial flow to a well in an unconfined aquifer and allows for the reduction in the saturated depth. The feasibility of removing large quantities of water is examined by considering a typical example.

    Notes: The Southern Lincolnshire Limestone is an important groundwater resource; however, for many years water has been lost from the aquifer system through uncontrolled artesian flow from wild-bores in the Fenland area. During 1991–92, there was an extensive programme of sealing or controlling the wild-bores, and compensation flows for ecological and farming purposes were provided at some sites.This paper describes a field study which was designed to identify the important features of part of the catchment; this was followed by the development of an existing groundwater model to provide an improved representation of the uncontrolled and controlled wild-bores. The model is used to assess the consequences of controlling or sealing the wild-bores.

    Notes: This paper reviews methods of estimating recharge for a wide variety of aquifers in Britain. A soil moisture balance technique is used with direct representation of relevant soil and crop properties. Recharge contributions due to rainfall, runoff from impervious areas and leaking water mains and sewers are considered. In many field situations low permeability strata, which overlie the main aquifer, modify the timing and magnitude of the actual recharge. Runoff from less permeable strata can become runoff-recharge at the aquifer outcrop. Reference is made to several case studies.

    Notes: Detailed metering trials together with a survey of property type, household size, and appliance ownership have provided an opportunity to study domestic demand in detail. The data are presented in a number of alternative ways to highlight the relationship between demand and features of the individual households. The uncertainties inherent in using small samples to estimate demands for an area are discussed, and the usefulness of ACORN classifications to characterize an area is examined.

    Notes: For several years resistance-capacitance networks have been used to simulate aquifers. Most reported work has been concerned with fast time analogues in which the period under consideracign is represented in micro-seconds. However the alternative slow time analogue has many advan tages since the electrical experiment takes several seconds. This results in simpler equipment and simpler experimental techniques.The paper concentrates on the practical aspects or the slow time analogue giving details of the components, describing a method of simulating wells and recharge and comparing measuring instruments. The techniques are illustrated by a simplified example.

    Notes: A numerical model is presented which represents both the radial and vertical flow components which usually result from pumping from boreholes in layered aquifers. This model, which is based on finite-difference approximations, runs on a microprocessor system and can be used for the analysis of pumping test results. A discussion on the interaction between the radial and vertical flow components is followed by a description of the model. A computer program in BASIC and a typical computer output are provided. The application of the model for the analysis of a pumping test in a weathered-fractured aquifer is described. Three case studies are reviewed where the numerical model is used to gain a greater understanding of the aquifer flow processes.

    Notes: Abstract. A method of analyzing the pumping and recovery phases of large diameter wells based on a Kernel function method is presented. Consideration is given to the effect of the seepage face, which is the difference between the well-water level and the aquifer level on the well face. A computer program for the Kernel function method written in BASIC, is provided. In the analysis of a representative field test, the importance of including the seepage face is demonstrated; if the seepage face is ignored, both the transmissivity and storage coefficient are underestimated.

    Notes: This paper examines the flow in heavily exploited alluvial and hard rock aquifers and demonstrates that vertical components of flow are of great importance. In a typical example of an alluvial aquifer it is shown that most of the discharge from tube wells originates from the phreatic surface flowing vertically through clay layers to the well screens. A second study of a hard rock aquifer indicates that a tube well in a fractured zone draws water horizontally from the fractured zone but this water is supplied by vertical flow from the weathered zone. The suitability of different types of mathematical models to represent heavily exploited hard rock and alluvial aquifers is also considered.
