Summary In the Department of Pulmonary Diseases of the Heckeshorn Hospital pleurisies with effusion definitely resulting from autoimmune and collagen diseases were found in the years 1964 to 1969 in 1.6 per cent of the patients with pleural effusion and in 2.6 per cent of the patients with inflammatory pleural exudate. The diagnostic criteria for rheumatoid pleurisy, Sjögren's syndrome pleurisy and lupus erythematosus pleurisy were determined on the basis of clinical, radiological, thoracoscopical, bioptic-histological and immunological examinations, and other laboratory tests made in 21 patients. The study resulted in obligate, typical and facultative findings. These are tabulated and illustrated by characteristic radiological, thoracoscopical and histological examples. With the determined obligate and typical criteria it is possible to readily diagnose probable, definite or classical rheumatoid pleurisy, Sjögren's syndrome pleurisy and lupus erythematosus pleurisy. The ascertained diagnostic criteria permit early diagnosis of the pleurisies with effusion of the systemic autoimmune diseases.
