Notes: A comparative study of larval growth in the different species of the genus Clarias in different regions revealed that in spite of strong differences in egg and larval size, the growth potential was quite similar. Differences in growth between species and regions were strongly correlated with the applied feeding strategy, the applied growth parameter and period of measuring. To evaluate feeding strategies, standardized procedures for measuring growth are needed. Recalculating the results of the mentioned study according to these standardized procedures revealed that both in India and Indonesia, the growth rate of C. batrachus larvae was too low. This is probably due to low feeding levels in India and premature weaning in Indonesia. The basic biology and nutritional physiology of the larvae of C. gariepinus have been studied extensively. At the start of exogenous feeding, the larvae have an advanced digestive system with a functional pancreas, liver and nutrient absorption capabilities, but lack a functional stomach. The advanced digestive system is further exemplified by the development of the enzymatic complex. Probably because of the rapid development of the digestive system, feeding live food organisms is mostly practiced for a few days only and is soon replaced by wet and/or dry diets. It is hypothesized that the requirement of live food or specific larval diets during the first days of exogenous feeding is related to the absence of pepsin digestion during this period. Further optimization of the feeding strategies should focus on this conclusion.

Notes: [Auszug] The naturally growing populations of Solanum nigrum at Delhi were classified mainly on the basis of the colour and size of the fruit into three morphologically distinguishable forms. In type I the fruits are shiny bluish black, in type II the fruits are orange coloured and in type III the fruits ...

Notes: Summary A case of venous angioma involving the frontal lobe is presented with surgical and histological confirmation. Only two other angiographically diagnosed cases have been reported previously in the literature. This case tends to support the entity of cerebral venous angioma as a distinct, though rare, type of cerebral vascular malformation.

Notes: Abstract Polypropylene was implanted with 100 keV titanium and silver ions to fluences of 1, 10 and 50×1019 ions m−2 using a vacuum arc metal-ion source. The implanted specimens were tested for sliding reciprocating wear properties using a nylon counterface, 1 N normal load, 3 mm stroke length and 10000 sliding cycles. The results of the wear tests showed that there was a dramatic improvement in wear properties for the 50×1019 ions m−2 titanium-implanted specimen, to the point that no wear damage was visibly evident after 10000 cycles. A similar wear improvement was not obtained for the lower fluences for titanium implantation or for the silver-implanted specimens. The improvement in wear properties was related to the mechanisms of linear energy transfer from the incident ions to the polypropylene substrate, and consequent effects on cross-linking, which is responsible for changes in properties. The linear energy transfer was quantified using Monte Carlo calculations. In addition, friction coefficient values were also correlated with the wear test results. The significance of high fluences for wear improvements by ion implantation was demonstrated in this study. The investigation showed that metal-ion implantation can be effective in significantly improving wear properties of polymers with a judicious choice of ion type and ion fluence.

Notes: Abstract Chloroform-methanol (2:1) extracts of the marine brown algaSargassum wightii (Grev.) J. Ag. yielded a compound with antibacterial activity. The compound, purified by silica gel column and preparative thin layer chromatography, was determined as dioctyl phthalate from spectroscopic data.

Notes: Summary The dominant surface energy budget parameters, namely the net radiation fluxes, must be precisely known for an understanding of southwest monsoon behaviour and the early stages of formation of a meteorological system, i.e. trough, low pressure, depression, cyclone etc., and break monsoon conditions over the Bay of Bengal region. The data measured during the MONEX-79 period from July 16–31 are used in order to study the fluctuations of energy fluxes and the net radiation in the month of July over the region. During this period the total energy flux is increasing from South to North with a maximum over the head of the Bay. However, the fluctuation of net radiation is not significant. There is an outstanding increase in the energy flux with anomalies of values 240 W/m2.
