Summary Sodium diethyldithiocarbamate was given by mouth to 1 week old and 6 month old domestic fowl. The rate of weight gain of the chicks given NaDDC was below that of the controls after 8 weeks of administration, lesions were first seen after 18 weeks and ataxia after 25 weeks of administration of NaDDC. There was a rapid loss of weight in the adults, lesions were first seen after 4 weeks and ataxia after 5 weeks of administration of NaDDC. The lesions were similar in both groups and consisted of degeneration of the long tracts of the spinal cord. The lesion fits with the „organo-phosphorus pattern” of degeneration and a comparison is made between the response of chicks and adults to organophosphorus compounds and to sodium diethyldithiocarbamate.
