    Notes: Thin nanoporous Si layers were formed on n-Si(100) in 0.1 M NH4F electrolyte and investigated with field emission scanning electron microscopy and photoluminescence (PL). The microstructure of the electrochemically prepared Si surfaces depended strongly on the pH of the electrolyte. A pebblelike surface structure was formed during anodization at pH 4.5, while nanoporous Si layers were formed at lower pH. The onset of macropore formation was observed after anodization at pH 3.0. The shape of the PL spectra was found to be practically independent of the nanoporous structure. The results are discussed on the basis of the etch rate of oxidized Si atoms and of the role of surface states for PL. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The electrochemical H-termination process of n-Si(111) surfaces in aqueous 0.1 M NH4F pH 4.0 solution was optimized for a two step procedure consisting of the surface smoothing during oxidation in the photocurrent oscillating potential region followed by the oxide etching and passivation of the surface atoms with hydrogen. The hydrogen termination was monitored in situ measuring the dark current transient and evaluated using pulsed surface photovoltage technique. An unusually low density of interface states it=1×1010 eV−1 cm−2 was obtained by the hydrogen termination on n-Si(111) surfaces following this procedure with better results than applying an electropolishing treatment. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die Hauptkomponente des Sexualpheromons des Einbindigen Traubenwicklers, (Z)-9-Dodecenylacetat, wurde innerhalb einer Rebanlage in einer Parzelle von 20×20 m von 110 Punkten aus gleichmässig verdampft. Jeden Abend wurden in der Parzelle zwischen 100 und 200 männliche Falter aus einer Laborzucht freigelassen und 10 Weibchen ausgesetzt, die an kurzen Fäden befestigt waren. Bei einer Verdampfungsrate von 700 mg pro Tag und Hektar legten anschliessend nur 2 von 94 Weibchen fertile Eier, bei 200 mg pro Tag und Hektar 3 von 63, während in der Kontrollperiode dieses Verhältnis 32:62 betrug. Dies zeigt, dass der Traubenwickler durch die Desorientierung mit Sexuallockstoff an der Kopulation weitgehend gehindert werden kann.
    Notes: Abstract (Z)-9-dodecenyl acetate, the major sex pheromone component of the European grape berry moth, Eupoecilia ambiguella, was continuously evaporated from 110 sources in a 20×20 m plot in a vineyard. inhibition of mating was demonstrated by releasing laboratory-reared males and exposing tethered females. At an average evaporation rate of 700 mg (Z)-9-dodecenyl acetate per day and hectare only 2 of 94 females were mated, at 200 mg per day and hectare 3 of 63 females, whereas 32 of 62 females were mated during the control period.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Chemische Analysen und Feldversuche zeigen, dass das Sexualpheromon des Kleinen Fruchtwicklers, G. lobarzewskii aus (E)-8-Dodecenylacetat (Z8-12:Ac) und (Z)-8-Dodecenylacetat (Z8-12:Ac) besteht. Die grösste Lockwirkung wurde mit einem Gemisch der beiden Substanzen bei einem E-Anteil von 80–95% erzielt. Dodecylacetat (12:Ac) und Tetradecylacetat (14:Ac) wurden ebenfalls in den weiblichen Pheromondrüsen nachgewiesen, hatten aber im Freiland keinen Einfluss auf die Lockwirkung. G. lobarzewskii tritt seit einiger Zeit in der Schweiz als Schädling von Apfel und Zwetschge auf und ist an ihrem charakteristischem Frassgang leicht erkennbar. Die Art wurde bisher irrtümlich als G. janthinana bezeichnet. G. janthinana lebt auf Rosaceen, und wird vom gleichen Substanzpaar angelockt, allerdings bei umgekehrtem Mischungsverhältnis (20% E).
    Notes: Abstract As shown by chemical analysis and field trapping, the sex pheromone of Grapholita lobarzewskii consists of a blend of (E)-8-dodecenyl acetate and (Z)-8-dodecenyl acetate. Maximum attractiveness was found at 80–95%. Dodecyl acetate and tetradecyl acetate, both present in the female gland, did not affect trap catch. G. lobarzewskii has recently gained importance as a pest of apple and plum, but has so far been referred to as Grapholita janthinana. The latter is attracted to the same two compounds, but in reversed portions (20% E).

    Notes: Abstract.  Short laser pulses (wavelength 337 nm, duration time 0.5 ns) are used for thermal processing of ultrathin nanoporous silicon layers (UPSL) prepared electrochemically on n- and p-type Si(1 1 1) in aqueous NH4F solution. The theoretical threshold for melting (W m ) of UPSL is about 0.01 J/cm2. This is about one order of magnitude below W m of crystalline silicon. A selective laser induced melting regime can be realized for which an UPSL is practically completely molten on the top of an unmolten crystalline silicon substrate. Investigations with scanning and high resolution transmission electron microscopy show the formation of crystalline silicon spheres with diameters in the range of some of ten nm in this regime.
