Description / Table of Contents: Abstract Difficulties with harmonization of analytical procedures and consequently poor comparability of generated data represent in the Czech Republic the main reason for the delay in issuing of updated legislation for polychlorobiphenyls (PCBs) in foodstuffs. This study draws attention to possible errors (overestimations) that can occur during routine determination of these residues in the fat portion of biotic matrices. We demonstrate the gas Chromatographic (GC) conditions under which interfering contaminants such as phthalates and/or chlorinated pesticides can be separated from analytes. Discussion is focused on the advantages and drawbacks of GC with an electron capture detector, GC mass spectrometry and GC with an atomic emission detector. Various approaches used for calculation of PCBs contents are compared.

Notes: Abstract The analysis of odour components in East Indian Sandalwood Oil (Santalum album L.) and in Patchouli Oil (Pogostemon cablin Benth.) based on GC-, GC-FTIR- and GC-MS-data resulted in the identification ofα-santalene,α-santalal,β-santalal, epi-β-santalal,α-santalol,β-santalol, (E)-β-santalol,α-bergamotol and spirosantalol in Sandalwood Oil and of (−)-patchoulol,α-guaiene,α-patchoulene, seychellene,α-bulnesene, norpatchoulenol and pogostol in Patchouli Oil as the most intense aroma compounds of these oils.

Notes: Results of 16 different mass spectrometric ionization and sample-introduction methods are compared for the case of a thermally very labile antibiotic, rifapentine. These suggest that extensive thermal decomposition occurs during evaporation when the sample can come into contact with hot metal parts, usually the source housing. The intensity of the molecular ion and the extent of fragmentation depend on various parameters, such as the ionization process, positive or negative-ion detection and the type of sample introduction. The most informative methods for rifapentine seem to be ‘in-beam’ electron impact, negative ionization with particle beam and direct liquid introduction interfaces and positive- and negative-ion fast atom bombardment.
