Notes: The chain transfer activity of propylene leads to the formation of vinyl chloride-propylene copolymers with molecular weights lower than those of PVC homopolymers produced under similar conditions. It has been found that the addition of specified quantities of monomers with two or more active double bonds can increase the molecular weight of these copolymers without causing crosslinking.

Notes: A method has been developed for following the bromine and weight losses of fire retarded UPE as a function of temperature. The results obtained by this method indicate that those bromine-containing fire retardants which exhibit a linear LOI-bromine concentration relation, the bromine concentration in the pyrolytically produced fuel remains more or less constant, while for those materials which deviate positively from the linear relation (that is they are more efficient), the bromine concentration in the fuel tends to peak at certain temperatures. When this effect is combined with variation in composition of the pyrolytic fuel, a situation can arise where a high bromine concentration coincides with a fuel particularly sensitive to flame quenching by bromine. Such a combined effect may be the reason why some brominated fire retardants are far more effective than others.

Notes: Because of the allylic nature of propylene, the vinyl chloride-propylene system exhibits polymerization behavior markedly different from that of vinyl chloride, even at relatively low propylene concentrations. Propylene acts as a degradative chain-transfer agent, and as a result, both the polymerization rate and the molecular weight of the resultant copolymers are lower than those of the homopolymer, decreasing with increasing propylene content. Even at propylene concentrations as low as 10% the rate of polymerization is proportional to the initiation rate, indicating kinetic control by the propylene. The reactivity ratios of these monomers given by Cain were verified. The reciprocal intrinsic viscosity of the copolymer was found to be linearly related to the monomer feed composition.

Notes: The rate of formation of a number of dialkyl peroxydicarbonates and one acylperoxide under in situ conditions were followed by using a simulated suspension polymerization system. Results confirm previous findings based on polymer conversions and indicate that for dialkyl peroxydicarbonates, the in situ mode is suitable only for the lower alkyl derivatives.

Notes: The thermal decomposition of this resin was examined by quantitative pyrolysis - gas chromatography. The decomposition does not follow the Hurd-Blunck mechanism generally obeyed by beta-hydrogen containing esters. Instead, phthalic anhydride is extruded almost quantitatively. It is proposed that the mechanism involves the rearrangement of the phthalate C—O bonds to extrude the anhydride, leaving a maleic acid - dipropylene glycol polyester chain.
