    Notes: Abstract The response of an Australian arid-zone gecko community to sulphur dioxide and salt spray from a mine and industrial site was investigated from 1992 to 1995. Geckos were abundant and fecund at control sites in chenopod shrubland and annual capture rates were strongly influenced by minimum night temperatures. Capture rate and percentage of females gravid at sites exposed to high concentrations of air pollutants were significantly lower than at control sites. Discrepancies between control and impacted sites were greatest for the termite-specialist geckos Diplodactylus conspicillatus and Rhynchoedura ornata. An increase in capture rates and percentage of females gravid at sites close to the industrial site, followed a reduction in peak sulphur dioxide emissions. Geckos may be sensitive and useful bioindicators of the environmental impacts of some atmospheric pollutants.

    Notes: Significant annual variations in population size of most species were evident with greater abundance of most species in wet years. Habitat variables, particularly vegetation structure, were also an important determinant of the abundance of most bird species and tended to mask the impacts of the land use under investigation. Several bird species had benefited from the provision of permanent water at mining and pastoral sites. Other species utilized increased nesting or feeding opportunities associated with the mining operation and increased food supply at the pastoral sites. Crested bellbirds and mixed-feeding flocks of small insectivorous birds were apparently disadvantaged by mining and hence may be useful bioindicators of mining impacts. No bird species or community parameters were identified which could serve as useful early warning bioindicators of pastoral impacts.

    Notes: The habitat preferences, seasonal activity cycles and optimum sampling protocols of an ant community in the Australian arid zone were assessed by pitfall trapping. Diversity and abundance of ants peaked in the hotter summer months and varied greatly between different habitats. Sand dunes vegetated with tall perennial shrubs proved to be the most useful habitat for environmental monitoring using ants. Dominant and genera were suppressed by environmental stresses caused by salt spray from an underground mine. Remediation of the salt spray resulted in a general, yet inconsistent, recolonization of dominant ants at the expense of opportunistic genera. A greater understanding of the ecology of key ant species is required before ants can be used as unequivocal indicators of environmental condition at the Olympic Dam mine site.
