Notes: The reliance of social scientists on verbal response measures to evaluate social psychological attitude raises questions related to the validity of the measurement of intensity and meaning produced by these judgmental measures. This study presents a cross-modal (psychophysical and psychophysiological) approach to the evaluation of the direction, intensity, and meaning of attitude. In the present study psychophysical (category, magnitude scaling) and classically conditioned skin conductance responses are generated to measure the race-related attributes of a series of denotatively black and non-black political stimuli. The results of this study clearly demonstrate that all three measures can predict the racial direction of these stimulus items, but that categorical judgments fail to measure the relative intensity of the denotatively nonracial stimuli. The psychophysical and classically conditioned skin conductance response measures both produce a reasonable gradient of racial response intensity. However, there are clear differences in order and amplitude of response between the voluntary judgmental psychophysical and the more involuntary skin conductance responses to items which have multiple associative meanings. The implications of these results are discussed and suggestions are made for future research.

Notes: Abstract The temperature dependence of the hexagonal c unit cell parameter of high-purity NaNO3 shows an anomaly at 553 K corresponding to the orientational ordering transition. The a unit cell parameter is barely influenced by the transition. The single component spontaneous strain for this zone boundary instability is large (∼55×10−3 at 295 K), and couples quadratically with the order parameter. The critical exponent β is found to have the value 0.22 ± 0.01, which differs from that expected in the classical case. Below ca 450 K, crossover to tricritical behaviour is observed (β=1/4). The temperature evolution of the macroscopic order parameter as revealed by the temperature dependence of the spontaneous strain follows a tricritical behaviour between 70 K and 450 K. At temperatures below 70 K order parameter saturation is observed. Combined with recent data from specific heat measurements, the critical exponents suggest that the three-dimensional, three-states Potts model may describe the transition. Precursor spontaneous strain above T c is consistent with local ordering and may result from fluctuations associated with an antiordered NO3 group pair configuration.

Notes: Abstract Transmission electron microscope studies demonstrate a structural distinction between stoichiometric and ancient calcian dolomites of sedimentary origin. A modulated or tweed structure similar in appearance to spinodal microstructures characterizes ancient calcian dolomites, whereas stoichiometric dolomites are homogeneous. Recent calcium-rich dolomites lack a modulated structure, but have a heterogeneous microstructure with high densities of growth defects. Electron and optical diffraction and lattice imaging suggest a fluctuation in interplanar spacing in a coherent lattice. In addition, lattice imaging also reveals discontinuous faults throughout the modulated structure. Ordering and possibly incipient exsolution are suggested, ‘c’ reflections in SAD patterns of calcian dolomites document a new superstructure in at least part of the lamellar structure and raise questions of different ordering states throughout the structure. The results provide new insight regarding the formation of sedimentary dolomites

Notes: Abstract Most sedimentary Ca-rich dolomite in pre-Holocenerocks is known to exhibit a fine-scale modulation inTEM images, reflecting a domain structure of which onecomponent is a low-symmetry variant of dolomite. Thevarious structural models proposed for thelow-symmetry component involve Ca–Mg order patternsthat are different from that in dolomite. Caution istherefore required for interpretation of X-raydiffraction data, which average over the entirestructure. The average structures of two Ca-richdolomites having a structural modulation are refinedusing single-crystal intensity data. The resultsindicate a poor fit using a dolomite model, which isconsistent with the findings from TEM and electrondiffraction indicating that one component of thedomain structure is different than dolomite. Resultsalso indicate that average model A and B cation siteshave mixed Ca–Mg occupancy, which provides someconstraints on possible models for the low-symmetrydomains.

Notes: The histochemistry and ultrastructure (SEM and TEM) of the spermatheca of Biomphalaria glabrata was investigated to elucidate the function of this organ and to compare its structure and function to similar organs found in other species. The spermatheca has a debris-filled lumen surrounded by a thin wall of tissue. The cells adjacent to the lumen are of three columnar epithelial cell types. Two cell types have abundant microvilli and mammalian cell-like organelle distribution and morphology. The above cell types differ in the electron density of their cytoplasms, nuclear morphologies, and organelle content. The third cell type differs from the other two in its cytoplasmic makeup. However, the most distinctive difference is the presence of large numbers of cilia at the apical surface with no evidence of microvilli. These columnar cells rest on a basal lamina adjacent to a two to three cell thick muscle layer. The entire organ is surrounded by an adventitia of unusual morphology. Histochemical investigation demonstrated that DNAase, RNAase, and protease are present in the lumen, alkaline phosphatase is associated primarily with the microvilli, small amounts of acid phosphatase are concentrated in the midcell area of the columnar epithelium, and ATPase activity is localized in the muscle cells and just below the absorptive surface of the microvillous cells. The luminal contents and adventitial areas are Sudan Black B positive, all areas of the lumen and organ wall are PAS positive, the cell nuclei and amorphous masses in the lumen showed Feulgen staining, and large vesicles in the columnar cells were Oil Red O positive. Apparently, the spermatheca of B. glabrata is both a digestive and absorptive structure. Although this organ shares functional similarities with those found in opisthobranchs and terrestrial pulmonates, the epithelia of the spermatheca differ dramatically in these groups.

Notes: Summary The adventitial cells surrounding the spermatheca of the reproductive system of Sonorella santaritana (Mollusca: Gastropoda) appear to have an unusual system of vesicles. Electron micrographs of the membranes forming these vesicles show that they have multiple openings to the cell's exterior and that each opening has a “pore complex”. In addition, secondary vesicles appear to be generated by the primary vesicles. Evidence is presented suggesting that these vesicles represent a previously unreported membrane transport system.

Notes: The ultrastructure of the spermatheca of the reproductive tract in the pulmonate snail, Sonorella santaritana, was investigated. This organ has a debris-filled lumen and an outer wall which can be divided into three distinct layers. The cell layer adjacent to the lumen is comprised of two cell types, tall columnar epithelial cells with microvilli and cells lacking microvilli. The next layer also has two cell types, muscle cells and apparent pigment cells. The most distant layer is an adventitia of large glycogen-containing cells. The lumen of the spermatheca contains a core of partially digested sperm and related materials. The luminal contents and the cellular morphology of this organ suggest that the spermathecal functions are both digestive and absorptive. It is proposed that excess sperm and related materials are transported to the spermatheca, digested, and the usable products are reabsorbed.
