Experiments on the Polycondensation of 2,3,6-Tri-O-benzyl-D-glucopyranose and Polymerization of 1,4-Anhydro-2,3,6-tri-O-benzyl-α-D-glucopyranosePolycondensation of 2,3,6-tri-O-benzyl-D-glucose (1) or 2,3,4-tri-O-benzyl-D-glucose (3) cannot be achieved as both compounds are converted by H+;-ion catalysis into their inner anhydrides [1,4-anhydro-2,3,6-tri-O-benzyl-α-D-glucose (2) and 1,6-anhydro-2,3,4-tri-O-benzyl-β-D-glucose (4) resp.]. On the other hand 2 has been polymerized by treatment with the complexing agents PF5, SbF5 etc., the former agent being the better; the latter affords only small yields. Both the 1,4- and 1,5-rings react, the 1,4-ring obviously being more reactive since the resulting O-benzylated polysaccharides that are formed contain longer (1 → 4)-pyranoid chains than (1 → 5)-furanoid chains. There is no statistical distribution of pyranoid and furanoid linkages; besides α-glycosidic linkages predominate. Cleavage of the benzyl residues affords the free polysaccharides.
Notes:
