Notes: An analysis is presented which enables detailed description of solute concentration profiles for free-flow elecrophoresis in planar slit flows. This analysis is suitable for either batch or continuous operation with arbitrary variation of solute input rate, and it requires no seriously restrictive assumptions other than constancy of equilibrium and transport properties. It permits for the first time a systematic investigation of the effects of governing parameters and can be used to optimize operating conditions. The most significant finding is that Taylor dispersion, ignored in previous analyses, markedly reduces separability.

Notes: The utility of electropolarization chromatography for fractionation of native protein mixtures is examined both mathematically and experimentally.Mathematical prediction based on a simplified but basically realistic model of this process suggests it to be very promising for both analytical and preparative purposes. This expectation is borne out by tests with well-defined proteins in single ultrafiltration fibers. The major observed departure from model prediction is an unexpectedly sharp increase in retardation at a critical voltage specific to the protein and composition of the carrier electrolyte. This permits sharper separations than previously expected and is thus favorable.

Notes: An effective means is developed for describing two-dimensional convective dispersion in the presence of polarizing fields. Explicit results are given for planar fields applied across Poiseuille flows, and these are used to characterize hollow fiber electropolarization chromatography (EPC).
