Notes: We have investigated the transverse and longitudinal electro-optic properties of epitaxial single crystalline lead lanthanum zirconate titanate ferroelectric thin films grown by pulsed laser deposition on [100] silicon and MgAl2O4 substrates. With the electric field applied in a longitudinal geometry, we measure birefringence shifts of up to 1×10−3. These films exhibit a large optical hysteresis, and may provide a basis for electrically written, optically and nondestructively read nonvolatile memories.

Notes: We investigate the propagation of 20 fs pulses through a generalized pulse shaper/compressor and synthesize shaped waveforms with 20 fs features by linear spectral filtering using a generalized pulse shaper consisting of gratings and reflective optics. The use of reflective optics in the pulse shaper avoids cubic phase dispersion associated with lenses which significantly broaden short 20 fs pulses. As an example of our pulse-shaping capabilities, we generate pulse trains with repetition rates in excess of 12 THz using phase-only filtering.

Notes: Abstract Femtosecond pump-probe reflectance of graphite and diamond targets following intense laser irradiation is used to measure the optical properties of the pressurized liquid carbon phase while it retains an optically sharp surface before expanding hydrodynamically as a hot plasma. These measurements allow the historically elusive liquid phase of carbon to be characterized optically for the first time. A Drude dielectric model of the reflectance spectrum 1 ps after excitation just above the melting threshold reveals a poorly conducting liquid metal with a dc resistivity 625±75μΩ · cm. The optically determined resistivity decreases with increasing sample excitation. The initial stages of hydrodynamic surface expansion of Al, W, and C targets are also quantitatively characterized by time-resolved reflectance, revealing the expansion speed as well as further dielectric properties of the high-temperature-pressure phase.
