Notes: Abstract A mechanochromic polyurethane elastomer was synthesized and demonstrated. Azobenzene chromophores were introduced into a copolyamide oligomer to provide conformational latches which stabilized thecis-azobenzenes by the formation of intramolecular hydrogen bonds. The copolyamide oligomer was chemically inserted into a polyurethane copolymer. The chromophores in the resulting copolymer were transformed to thecis-form by ultraviolet (UV) irradiation (λ=365 nm) and then succesively stretched and relaxed to strains of 100%, 200%, and 300%. After 100% strain and relaxation, the absorbance of polyurethane copolymer at λ=380 nm, which indicates transformation to the trans form, was not significantly increased. However, the absorbance increased with 200% and 300% tensile strain followed by relaxation. A mechanochromic relationship between absorbance increase at λ=380 nm in the relaxed sample and the maximum strain to which the sample was subjected was thus demonstrated.

Notes: Summary Molecular morphology of a surfaces of fibers and films from novel segmented polyimides with different rigidity of the backbones was studied by atomic force microscopy. It was observed that surface morphology on a molecular scale is formed by straight segments arranged in a {1–10} plane for polymide fiber and in a {010} plane for polyimide film. Z-shaped backbone segments at the fiber surfaces are arranged at definite angles with respect to the fiber axis. The parameters of unique cells, positional correlations and the arrangement of molecular segments at the interface are discussed.

Notes: Liquid SO2 sealed into tubes made of a fluorocarbon copolymer permeates the walls of the tube at a temperature-dependent but accurately reproducible rate. Sulfur dioxide dispensers made in this way are called permeation tubes and are useful for calibrating instruments that measure SO2 concentrations in air. The National Bureau of Standards calibrates SO2 permeation tubes and makes them available as Standard Reference Materials. The permeation rate in a batch of nominally identical tubes varies enough that each Standard Reference Material tube must be individually calibrated. Changes in the length or radial dimensions of the tubes are much too small to explain most of this variation. An excellent (negative) correlation is found between the measured permeation rate and the density of the polymer (or weight per unit length). Since both the measured density and the permeation rate for this semi-crystalline polymer depend upon morphological factors, but in different ways, x-ray diffraction measurements of the thickness and orientation of the lamellar crystals were made and a mathematical model was set up to identify the morphological factors which can cause variations in the permeation rate.

Notes: The dendritic crystals of polyethylene described in this paper illustrate many details of the morphology of polyethylene crystals including the development of spiral growths, delineation of fold domains, the attachments between adjacent lamellae, and fracture behavior of single lamellae. Definitions of terms useful in the description of lamellar crystals of polymer molecules are also given.

Notes: The self-diffusion coefficient D of paraffin and polyethylene melts - covering the range between N = 19 and 103 where N is the number of monomeric units - was measured by the pulsed-magnetic-field-gradient NMR method for diffusion times between 3 ms and 1 s. For the paraffins, D is proportional to N-2 though the molecular weights are smaller than the critical molecular weight for entanglement. In polyethylene, melts a strong dependence of the diffusion coefficient on the diffusion time is observed, whereas no such dependence is found in paraffin melts. A mathematical formalism for describing spin-echo attenuation in terms of a velocity autocorrelation function is shown to yield qualitative agreement with the experimental results.

Notes: The diffusion coefficient of butane in linear polyethylene at room temperature as a function of the vapor pressure of butane was measured by the spin-echo method with a pulsed magnetic field gradient. For the Special morphology of randomly oriented stacks of parallel lamellas the detour factor is 1/3. As long as the blocking factor and migration through the lamellas can be neglected, the local diffusion coefficient Da of the small molecules through the amorphous layers in the direction parallel to the lamellas is three times the apparent diffusion coefficient D derived from the decay of the amplitude of the spin echo under the assumption of an infinitely extended homogeneous medium. The diffusion coefficient and the spin-spin relaxation time both increase exponentially with increasing pressure, i.e., butane concentration in the polymer, while the spin-lattice relaxation time is pressure independent and seems to be determined by interaction with the amorphous polyethylene matrix.

Notes: The mechanical and morphological properties of lamellar crystals of polyethylene were studied by deliberately deforming the crystals with a localized strain of known direction and amplitude. In most of the experiments the deformation was achieved by placing the polymer crystals on a thin, brittle, electron-transparent substrate which was supported by a plastic film. Elongation of the plastic film cracked the brittle substrate, and the polyethylene crystals either broke or were converted into fibers and drawn across the cracks. The breaking and drawing properties of the crystal are related to the orientation of the crystal with respect to the crack and to the intersection of fold domains by the crack. Localized deformation of crystals in suspension by ultrasonic irradiation and by other means is discussed.
