    Notes: Abstract The ultrastructure of asexual spores (conidia) produced by the mycelial form of Paracoccidioides brasiliensis was studied for the first time with transmission electron microscopy, using thin sections of aldehyde-osmium-fixed and epoxy-resin-embedded samples. The various types of conidia observed in the sections correlated well with previous light-microscopic descriptions. These types were intercalary or apical conidia, depending on their location along the originating hyphae. As in previous studies they were characterized as arthroconidia, aleuriospores and sessile or pedunculate pyriform conidia. The sporogenous cells were clearly distinguished from hyphal cells by the thickness and appearance of their cell walls. Copious fibrillar material (glycocalyx) detected at the cell surface was stained with ruthenium red during the fixation process. Typical subcellular organelles (nucleus, nucleolus, mitochondria, ribosomes, etc) were found in most of the sections. It was concluded that the spores produced by the mycelial phase of P. brasiliensis possess all attributes of viable and physiologically competent eukaryotic cells.

    Notes: Abstract The conidia produced by the mycelial form of Paracoccidioides brasiliensis were examined by scanning electron microscopy for the first time. Several different conidial types were characterized. These included intercalary arthroconidia, several types of septate conidia that are formed from other conidia, pedunculate conidia, and terminal hyphal conidia. In addition, the ultrastructure of the supporting pedestal of the pedunculate conidium was found to be separated from the mother conidium by a septum in some instances, and at other times it was not.

    Notes: Abstract Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. medellin was grown until sporulation in a 1.1 l fermenter in batch and intermittent fed-batch culture. At optimum conditions 25 g dry cells l−1 and 9×108 spores ml−1 were produced. Toxicity of the final biomass showed a half lethal concentration on third instar Culex quinquefasciatus larvae of 295 ng ml−1.

    Description / Table of Contents: Sumario Un nuevo derivado del imidazole para uso oral, ketoconazole, fué empleado en el tratamiento de 5 pacientes con paracoccidioidomicosis. Se condujo la terapia por un año, con base a la administración de una pastilla (200 mg) por día en 2 pacientes; en los 3 restantes, esta dosis fué reducida a la mitad y mantenida en tal nivel por otros 6 meses. La respuesta fué excelente con mejoría clínica objetiva y cicatrización de las lesiones tegumentarias y pulmonares. Los estudios micológicos y serológicos, a la par que la sensibilidad cutanea, llevados a cabo durante el curso del tratamiento indicaron también mejoría. No se anotó ninguna toxicidad para la droga ni los pacientes experimentaron efectos secundarios. Las ventajas de esta nueva clase de terapia son discutidas en el texto.
    Notes: Summary Ketoconazole, a new oral imidazole derivative, was employed for the treatment of five patients with paracoccidioidomycosis. The response was excellent, with objective clinical improvement and healing of both mucocutaneous and pulmonary lesions. Mycological and serological tests, as well as delayed hypersensitivity, were assessed and found to correlate with clinical improvement. Therapy was conducted for 12 months with a dose of 200 mg day in 2 patients; in the remainder the dose was reduced (100 mg day) after the first 6 months and maintained as such for an equal period. No side-effects or toxicity were noted despite prolonged treatment. The advantages of the new therapeutic approach are discussed.
