    Notes: In many practical cases, the crack growth leads to abrupt failure of components and structures. For reasons of a reliable quantification of the endangerment due to sudden fracture of a component, therefore, it is of enormous importance to know the threshold values, the crack paths and the growth rates for the fatigue crack growth as well as the limiting values for the beginning of unstable crack growth (fracture toughness). This contribution deals with the complex problem of a—however initiated—crack, that is subjected to a mixed-mode loading. It will present the hypotheses and concepts, which describe the superposition of Mode I and Mode II (plane mixed mode) as well as the superposition of all three modes (Mode I, II and III) for spatial loading conditions. Those concepts admit a quantitative appraisal of such crack situations and a characterization of possible crack paths.

    Notes: In this paper, the rather complex three-dimensional (3D) fatigue crack growth behaviour in a single-edge notched (SEN) specimen with an inclined plane of the initial crack under torsion loading is investigated with the aid of ADAPCRACK3D programme and by application of a recently developed 3D fracture criterion. It will be shown that the computationally simulated results for fatigue crack growth in the FE model of the specimen are in good agreement with experimental findings for the development of spatially twisted and warped crack faces in the real laboratory test specimen. Consequently, also for this case with a rather complex 3D crack growth behaviour, the functionality of the ADAPCRACK3D programme and the validity of the proposed 3D fracture criterion can be stated.

    Notes: Abstract The behavior of interlaminar fracture of fiber reinforced laminated polymeric composites has been investigated in modes I, II, and different mixed mode I/II ratios. The experimental investigations were carried out by using conventional beam specimens and the compound version of the CTS (compact tension shear) specimen. In this study, a compound version of the CTS specimen is used for the first time to determine the interlaminar fracture toughness of composites. In order to verify the results obtained by the CTS tests, conventional beam tests were also carried out. In the beam tests, specimens of double cantilever beam (DCB) and end notched flexure (ENF) were used to obtain the critical rates of the energy release for failure modes I and II. The CTS specimen is used to obtain different mixed mode ratios, from pure mode I to pure mode II, by varying the loading conditions. The highest mixed mode ratio obtained in the experiment was G I /G II =60. The data obtained from these tests were analyzed by the finite element method. The separated critical rates G I and G II of the energy release were calculated by using the modified virtual crack closure integral (MVCCI) method. The experimental investigations were performed on a unidirectional glass/epoxy composite. The results obtained by the beam and CTS tests were compared. It was found that the interlaminar fracture toughness G IC init of mode I at crack initiation and the corresponding value G II Cinit of mode II obtained by the conventional beam and the CTS tests were in rather good agreement. The experimental results of interlaminar fracture of mixed mode were used to obtain the parameters required for the failure criterion. The two different failure criteria were compared. The best correlation with the experimental data was obtained by using the failure criterion proposed by Wu in 1967 containing linear and quadratic terms of the rates of the energy release.

    Notes: Abstract Cracks in structures are often subjected to complex loading conditions. The direction of the crack extension depends on the normal and the shear components of the load. This paper is based on the kinking behaviour of cracks taking elastic-plastic behaviour of materials into account. The J-integral and the mixed-mode components J I and J II were determined after having performed several finite element analyses for different loading conditions. The path independence of J, J I and J II is investigated for both, the line integral proposed by Rice and the volume integral proposed by deLorenzi. For correctly determined crack deflection angles the J II-component vanishes when a FE-model with a kinked crack is considered. Hence, cracks propagate perpendicularly to the local mode I load.
