    Notizen: Two-hourly plasma glucose measurements were made over a 24-hour period in 24 pregnant women with chemical diabetes treated by dietary carbohydrate restriction alone. The values obtained between midnight and 0600 hours displayed the best correlation with the mean of the diurnal values, the strongest individual correlation being at 0200 hours. During the daytime, the mean of the plasma glucose values before breakfast (0600 hours) and lunch (1200 hours) and two hours after supper (2000 hours) provided the strongest correlation with the mean diurnal value and these are recommended as the routine sampling times for assessment of diabetic control in pregnant women with dietary treatment for chemical diabetes.

    Notizen: Three years' experience of a total of 128 patients undergoing surgery for stress incontinence is described. Forty-three patients had an internal urethrotomy performed routinely at the end of the operation, 26 had routine urethral dilatation and 59 had neither procedure. Internal urethrotomy, and to a lesser extent urethral dilatation, resulted in prompt return of spontaneous and efficient micturition following removal of the Foley catheter on the third postoperative day. The postoperative stay averaged 6·4 days in the urethrotomy group of patients, 7·6 days in those who had urethral dilatation and 10·6 days in the others. The two-year cure rate in the patients who had neither procedure performed was 85 per cent and as yet no failures have occurred in the patients who had internal urethrotomy or urethral dilatation performed.

    Notizen: A healthy 22-year-old woman was noted to have erythrocytes of the Pk phenotype: a strong Pk antigen, no detectable P antigen and anti-P antibody in her serum. Her erythrocytes contained four to six times as much Pk glycolipid (globotriaosylceramide or CTH) and approximately half as much P glycolipid (globotertraosylceramide or globoside) as normal red cells. The structures of CTH and globoside were characterized by analysis of permethylated sugars and complement fixation in addition to chromaographic mobility and sugar composition. Inasmuch as the erythrocytes of two Pk individuals that were analysed previously (Marcus et al., 1976) contained no detectable globoside, these abnormalities appear o represent a new phenotype in the P blood group system.
