    Notes: : A comparative study of the concentration of asbestos fibers in drinking water supplies of southeastern Quebec was undertaken to assess the relative contributions of fibers by asbestos-bearing railway ballast and naturally occurring asbestos deposits. Water samples were taken from areas where one or the other potential sources or neither potential source was present. In addition, rainwater samples were taken to assess the importance of atmospheric contributions. The sampling design accounted for potential variations in fiber counts due to the season, location and analytical procedures.Fiber concentrations were estimated from counts made on a JEOL 100CX scanning transmission electron microscope and statistically compared among areas. These levels were then compared with levels found in other areas of Canada and the United States.The results indicate that the rail ballast could be contributing statistically (albeit marginally) significant quantities of fibers to water supplies during the summer but not in the spring. Estimated concentrations in water supplies ranged between 1.7 × 106fibers/liter and 147.8 × 106fibers/liter. Fiber levels in samples taken during the spring were significantly higher and more variable than those taken during the summer. The presence of fibers in rainwater samples at concentrations of 1.9 × 106fibers/liter, 18.3 × 106fibers/liter and 23.7 × 106fibers/liter suggests that atmospheric transport may play an important role in contributing fibers to regional systems. Fiber levels found in these systems are not unique when compared to levels observed elsewhere in North America.

    Notes: Abstract Chalcopyrite-rich bedded and vein mineralization at Kapunda occurs in two locally developed dolosiltstone units within a sequence of generally darker-coloured, finer-grained calcmudstones and siltstones. The Mine Series accumulated in shallow water to supratidal, sabkha-like environments; there is no evidence for igneous activity in the region. Isotope data for bedded sulphides are characteristic of biological sulphate reduction in a restricted basin. It is likely that iron sulphides were produced initially, and that copper was introduced subsequently in mildly oxidizing, highly saline groundwaters, the influence of which is seen in the δ13C-δ18O correlation for dolomite in the mineralized siltstones. Isotopic data support derivation of the veins from their host sediments, and this appears to have occurred before lithification.

    Notes: Abstract The stratigraphic setting and geological environment of the Boorloo stratiform copper prospect is described. This prospect occurs in the Umberatana Group of the Adelaide Supergroup in the Willouran Ranges of South Australia. Stratiform copper mineralization occurs in stacked, braided, siliciclastic channels on the middle and distal portions of a late Proterozoic river-dominated delta. Comparison is made between this river-dominated delta copper system and the much larger river-dominated delta copper system of the Proterozoic Udokan deposit in the U. S. S. R. It is suggested that the traditional classifications of stratiform copper sensu strictu deposits as arenaceous-ore or oreshale can be viewed as dip-system or strike-system deposits respectively.

    Notes: Abstract Zipf's Law is a mathematical expression of the relationship between size and rank orders of some discrete phenomena. We have used this relationship to predict the undiscovered viable copper reserves for the Zambian Copperbelt. This prediction has been reinforced by canvassing geological opinion. As two semi-numerate exploration geologists, we naively risk predicting the undiscovered gold resources of the West Australian shield.
