Notes: Spores of Bacillus subtilis var. niger and B. stearothermophilus irradiated in nitrogen were killed in greater numbers in the presence of vitamin KC, 4.amino-1-naphthol, or 2-amino-1-naphthol than when irradiated without chemical. When irradiation was performed in air, the chemicals were without effect, or even protective. Spores of both organisms were particularly sensitive when irradiated in nitrogen with 4-amino-1-naphthol.Irradiation of Micrococcus radiodurans in anoxia with these naphthol derivatives gave losses in cell recovery that resulted in much lower populations than could he attributed to chemical toxicity per se. These chemicals were found to be toxic to a yeast that had been isolated from frozen orange juice when the preparations were in buffer of pH 7.0 and 4.0. When the yeast was suspended in orange juice, on the other hand, the chemicals were neither toxic nor radiosensitizers. Milk was also found to interfere with the bactericidal and radiolethal activities of these chemicals. Sulfhydryl compounds were shown to decrease radiolethal action.

Notes: Different water activities were obtained in precooked bacon by varying the frying time. Water activity (aw) correlated best to the moisture, salt and protein content. When stored aerobically at 37°C, S. aureus A100 was capable of rapid growth in precooked bacon at a aw of 0.84 or above, whereas at 20°C a aw of 0.88 or higher was required. Under anaerobic storage at 37°C, growth was observed at a aw of 0.90, and at 20°C slight growth was noted at a aw of 0.91. The increase in the minimal aw required for aerobic growth at the lower temperature was reflected in the differences between the isotherms obtained at 37°C and 20°C. The maximum populations achieved were higher for samples stored aerobically. Enterotoxin A (19–821 ng/g) was found in all aerobically stored samples where growth occurred. Enterotoxin A (38–109 ng/g) was also found in all anaerobically incubated samples where the population of S. aureus increased more than one logarithmic cycle.

Notes: Antibodies in sera of HIV-1 infected individuals against the HIV-1 core protein (p24), HIV-1 envelope gtycoprotein (gp120) and reverse transcriptase (RT) are characterized by a skewed light chain isotype expression. The kappa/lambda ratios of antibodies to p24 and gp120 in infected individuals were found to be unique in each individual, but constant over several years independently from disease progression. The oligoclonal nature of the anti-HIV-1 antibodies suggested by skewed kappa/lambda expression was confirmed with isoelectric focusing of affinity purified antibodies to p24 and gp120. Analysis of the utilization of V gene families in purified anti-p24 and anti-gp120 antibodies revealed a restricted and biased VH gene family usage. In contrast, the utilization of VK gene families appeared to be random. The finding of stable and restricted antibody responses in infected individuals could be one of the causes for the failure to produce antibodies to HIV-1 that are effective against escape virus variants.

Notes: The limiting water activity (aw) for the growth of S. aureus A-100 sealed in cans at an oxygen concentration of 5.5% was 0.87 at 37°C and 0.91% at 20°C, values intermediate to those obtained previously for aerobic and anaerobic storage. Maximum populations attained at 37°C and 20°C were equal and once achieved population levels declined more slowly at 20°C than at 37°C. Enterotoxin A production was detected for population levels exceeding 106 CFU/g bacon and were 100 ng/g bacon at 37°C and 16 ng/g bacon at 20°C. It is suggested that while temperature and oxygen are important considerations, aw, being the main parameter in controlling microbial growth, should be measured directly rather than depending on indirect measurements such as the moisture-salt ratio.

Notes: [Auszug] The total counts (Fig. 1) of the unirradiated controls (all of which were found to be spoiled after 3 weeks) were much higher for packs FP than for packs LP and VP. After 3 weeks in storage all the irradiated samples were judged by odour and appearance to be in an acceptable condition. The ...
