    Notes: A numerical procedure for evaluating fatigue crack closure from load-local deformation data is presented. The local compliance is assumed to vary during the entire loading cycle, including the portion when the crack is fully open. The closure mechanism-related characteristic load levels are identified based on comparisons between the open crack compliance variations upon loading and unloading. This type of compliance analysis is conditioned by an appropriate smoothness of the measured data. Hence, the choice and optimization of the procedure for smoothing of the measured data. Hence, the choice and optimization of the procedure for smoothing the recorded signals is thoroughly addressed in this paper. The performance of the algorithm is evaluated from comparisons between the computed closure parameters and their reference values which have been previously shown to correlate the observed crack growth rate behaviour.

    Notes: A summary is given of reported trends in fatigue crack growth observed in variable amplitude fatigue tests on metallic materials, specifically on steels, under both simple and complex load histories. The effects of load variables, specimen geometry, material properties, microstructure and environment are considered. Attention is given to the threshold behaviour and small crack effects. The reviewed data suggest that, depending on a particular combination of load parameters, material, geometry and environment, variable amplitude load sequences of the same type can produce either retardation or acceleration in fatigue crack growth.

    Notes: The current understanding of the underlying reasons behind the load interaction effects in fatigue crack growth under variable amplitude loading is presented. Mechanistic arguments proposed to control the load interaction phenomena are reviewed and evaluated based on their capability to qualitatively explain empirical trends in variable amplitude fatigue crack growth summarized in Part I [Fatigue Fract. Engng Mater. Struct. 1998, 21(8), 987–1006] of the present paper. Mechanisms linked to plastic straining at the crack tip enable an interpretation of the majority of the experimental results. Some observations, however, which cannot be understood in terms of plasticity-induced crack closure, or which are even in contradiction with the crack closure approach, indicate a possible role of other factors. A general conclusion is that conditions under which various phenomena can affect variable amplitude fatigue crack growth and interactions between them are insufficiently recognized.

    Notes: Abstract The ability of a wide variety of soil-borne fungal strains to degrade four structurally different com pounds containing PC bonds, namely the naturally occurring amino acid ciliatine, the popular herbicide glyphosate, phosphonoacetic acid and 2-amino-3-phosphonopropionic acid, was studied in order to show that soil fungi may play an important role in the biodegradation of organophosphonates. Most of the strains appeared to utilize ciliatine as the sole source of phosphorus for growth. Only a limited number of strains were able to grow on the other phosphonates used in this work. The strains of Trichoderma harzianum, Scopulariopsis sp. and Aspergillus niger chosen for more detailed study show the ability to degrade ciliatine, glyphosate and also amino(3-methoxyphenyl)mehtylphosphonic acid effectively.
