    Notes: Fatigue testing of typical process-development ferroelectric capacitors requires application of controlled high-frequency waveforms to a capacitor (in the nF range) whose impedance at frequencies of interest is only a few Ω. Only experimental setups which have been designed with this fact in mind will give meaningful results. We analyze a range of typical setups and give the maximum fatigue frequency for each. A simple, standard setup may only allow frequencies of 20 kHz (109 cycles in an overnight run). A well-optimized setup will work at frequencies in the MHz range, allowing reaching 1011 cycles in an overnight run.

    Notes: Summary. One hundred and sixty-five women admitted to a gynaecology unit with lower abdominal pain were screened for infection with Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Chlamydia trachomatis by members of a department of genitourinary medicine. C. trachomatis alone was detected in 21 patients. N. gonorrhoeae alone was isolated from five patients, and dual infection was present in six patients, giving a total of 32 (19%) patients in whom a sexually transmitted disease (STD) was diagnosed. The combination of an endocervical swab placed in Amies transport medium for gonococcal isolation and an endocervical slide for immunofluorescent detection of chlamydiae proved to be a simple and accurate method of screening for STD. Asaresultof contact tracing, 16 sexual partners of women in whom STD was detected were examined. Three cases of gonocoecal and ninc cases of non-gonococcal urethritis were diagnosed. None of the sexual partners had Symptoms suggestive of genitourinary infection.

    Notes: The first determination of the rate of reaction of OH radicals with HBr at temperatures below 249 K is reported. Rate constants measured from 295 to 23 K increase monotonically with decrease in temperature and are faster than has previously been thought at the temperatures present in the mid and low stratosphere. The observed negative temperature dependence is well predicted by a simple formula deduced from quantum scattering calculations employing the rotating bond approximation.

    Notes: An entirely new experimental method is described which enables the rate constants of neutral–neutral gas-phase reactions to be measured at ultralow temperatures. The measurements are made by applying the pulsed laser photolysis (PLP), laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) technique of studying the kinetics of free radical reactions in the ultracold environment provided by the gas flow in a Cinétique de Réaction en Ecoulement Supersonique Uniforme (CRESU) apparatus. The experimental method is described in some detail and its application and limitations are discussed. Results are reported for the reactions of CN radicals with O2 and NH3. For reaction (1) between CN and O2 data are reported for the temperature range T=13–295 K and the rate constants are well-matched by the expression k1(T)=(2.49±0.17)×10−11 (T/298)(−0.63±0.04) cm3 molecule−1 s−1. For reaction (2) between CN and NH3, rate constants in the temperature range T=25–295 K fit the expression k2(T)=(2.77±0.67)×10−11 (T/298)(−1.14±0.15) cm3 molecule−1 s−1. The kinetic data are discussed in terms of the latest quantum chemical and reaction rate theories for these systems.

    Notes: Infrared fluorescence from HBr and C2D2(ν3) has been measured following irradiation of HBr–C2D2 mixtures with a pulsed HBr laser. The fluorescence decay from both species yields the total rate constant for deactivation of HBr(v=1) by collisions with C2D2, k=(1.6±0.1)×104 s−1 Torr−1. The exponential rise of C2D2(ν3) fluorescence is characterized by the rate constants k=(3.4±0.2)×104 s−1 Torr −1 for collisions with both C2D2 and HBr, and k=(5.5±2.3)×103 s−1 Torr−1 for collisions with added Ar. A model developed to fit the observations implies that ν3 is populated indirectly by transfer from another, unidentified, level of C2D2, and that the exponential rise constants refer to transfer from ν3 to this level.

    Notes: We report the pathology of benign and malignant skin lesions from 13 renal allograft recipients. The 59 lesions included 18 squamous carcinomas, 16 verrucous keratoses, 19 warts with varying dysplasia, three plaque lesions resembling those found in epidermodysplasia verruciformis, two non-specific keratoses and one basal cell carcinoma. We delineate criteria for histological assessment of the presence of human papilloma virus (HPV) and use the term verrucous keratosis for lesions in which there is a putative viral contribution. Our findings emphasize the lack of correlation between clinical and histological assessment of the lesions. We note the variable and significant dysplasia within otherwise typical viral warts and the architectural features suggestive of HPV presence in the dysplastic lesions and in in situ and invasive squamous carcinomas. Parallel virological studies have revealed the presence of HPV 5/8 in over 60% of the invasive and in situ carcinomas probed. These HPV types have previously been isolated from squamous carcinomas of epidermodysplasia verruciformis, a condition whose defective cell-mediated immunity may be compared with that of the immunosuppression in our patients.

    Notes: One hundred and twenty renal transplant recipients were investigated. Fifty-eight (48%) were found to have warts, 13(11%) keratoses and six (5%) to have, or recently to have had cancers. The longer the time of immunosuppression, the greater the prevalence of warts; of those patients who had had their transplant for at least 5 years, 87% had warts. Those with a graft survival time of 10 years or more are at special risk of warts, keratoses and malignancy. Five (10%) of 50 women had genital warts, four of whom had internal lesions (vaginal, cervical or anal) and one developed a carcinoma of the vulva. These findings indicate the advisability of colposcopy for all female renal transplant recipients, a high risk group. Eighty-eight specimens from 42 patients were examined by DNA restriction enzyme analysis and cross hybridization for the presence and type of human papillomavirus (HPV). HPV DNA was detected in 66% of the warts examined, HPV2 and HPV4 occurring most often and HPV1 and HPV3 only infrequently. In sequential specimens from common hand warts of one individual, an HPV was found which could not be precisely identified but was related to HPV4. HPV16 was detected in a vaginal wart from one patient and an HPV6-related virus in a vulval wart of another. HPV DNA of an unknown type was demonstrated in one of 11 keratoses examined. With the probes used to examine the few samples of skin cancers available, HPV 16 was found in a squamous cell carcinoma of the vulva, and faint bands from an unidentified type of HPV were detected in two squamous cell carcinomata from a patient's hand. One woman had plaque lesions morphologically and histologically resembling those found in epidermodysplasia verruciformis (EV). HPV5 was identified in these lesions. This is only the third reported case of HPV5, previously thought to be unique to EV, in a renal transplant recipient.
