Abstract The hypothesis of uniform elemental composition of continental aerosol is supported with data from samples taken in and around Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Simple dilution by regional atmospheric mixing processes is proposed to explain variations in absolute concentrations of the aerosol while the elemental composition remains essentially unchanged. There are, however, certain elements (Fe, Zn, and Mn) which show a marked enrichment in close proximity to industrial activities.
