Notes: The persistence length of lugworm cuticle collagen in 0.1M acetic acid was evaluated as 1600 ∼ 1800 Å by Yamakawa-Fujii's model for a wormlike chain from the sedimentation constant and the intrinsic viscosity. The persistence length was further examined for a series of sample “collagen sonicates” produced by varying the duration of sonic irradiation. To estimate the salt effect on the persistence length, measurements were made over a range of NaCl concentrations from 0 to 0.1M. The results showed that the cuticle collagen and collagen sonicates had identical values of persistence length and that the neutral salt effect for the cuticle collagen was far smaller than that for DNA.

Notes: The viscosities and light-scattering properties of methyl ethyl ketone solutions, at 25 °C., containing fractions from samples of the two homopolymers and three copolymers prepared from methyl acrylate and methyl methacrylate, were measured. The relationship between intrinsic viscosity and apparent degree of polymerization can be roughly expressed in one equation, whereas the plots of extension of molecular chain in solution against apparent degree of polymerization form two groups one for poly-(methyl acrylate) and the other for poly-(methyl methacrylate) and the three copolymer samples. The results are discussed in terms of the effect of α-methyl substitution on the flexibility of the main chain based upon the knowledge obtained from simple molecules. The second virial coefficients for copolymers obtained from light scattering measurements are larger than those for homopolymers, showing the higher solubility behavior of copolymer molecules.
