Notes: Several authors have reported cases of patients with malignant lymphoma with unique characteristics, designated nasal-type T/NK cell lymphoma, which expresses the natural killer (NK) cell marker and shows frequent extra-nodal involvement and poor prognosis. We report 2 cases of this type of lymphoma which were CD56-positive and showed a histopathologically angiocentric pattern with cutaneous and subcutaneous tumorous lesions. Patient 1 had extensive invasion of skin, underlying skeletal muscle, spleen and bone marrow, and died of sepsis 34 months after onset. Patient 2 had multiple subcutaneous nodules and invasion to mammary gland, lung, lymph node and spleen at the time of her first visit. She died of a rapid invasion of lymphoma cells to the liver 5 months after onset. Both patients showed similar immunophenotypes of tumor cells (CD2+, CD3−, CD4−, CD8−, CD20−, CD56+) and germ line configuration of the heavy chain of immunoglobulin (JH), T-cell receptor C beta-1 subunit DNA and T-cell receptor J gamma subunit DNA. Epstein-Barr virus early regions RNA was demonstrated in the nuclei of tumor cells of both patients with in situ hybridization. The histopathological examination of the skin lesions of both patients revealed the features of angiocentric lymphoma. The detection of CD56 in the tumor cells of cutaneous lymphomas should be routinely performed for the early diagnosis of this type of lymphoma with extremely poor prognosis.

Notes: Abstract We report a patient with liver metastasis from gastric cancer who has achieved a 5-year survival after systemic chemotherapy. The patient was diagnosed with advanced gastric cancer and received a total gastrectomy in August 1991, followed by adjuvant chemotherapy. Liver and lymph node metastases were detected in April 1994, and systemic chemotherapy with a combination of etoposide, doxorubicin, and cisplatin was initiated. Although the liver metastasis completely disappeared, lymph node metastasis at the falciform ligament of the liver and around the portal fissure remained after six courses of this therapy. A second type of chemotherapy, a combination of 5-fluorouracil and methotrexate, was then administered, 12 times, from December 1994 to May 1995, during which time no disease progression was observed. After surgery for the metastatic lymph nodes in August 1995, no progression was observed until December 1998, when a tumor thrombus was detected in the portal vein. Combination chemotherapy of irinotecan and cisplatin was initiated in January 1999. Although tumor regression was achieved after two courses of this, the disease continued to progress after five courses. In July 1999, a fourth type of chemotherapy, using 1 M tegafur-0.4 M gimestat-1 M otastat potassium (S-1), was initiated, and size reduction of the tumor thrombus was achieved; this therapy has continued to the time of submission of this report.

Notes: 1,1′-Dialkylferrocene-3,3′-dicarbaldehydes (1a-c) with long alkyl chains such as ethyl, hexyl, and dodecyl groups were prepared in 13-25% yield via three-step reactions. The titanium-induced dicarbonyl-coupling reaction of 1a-c gave poly(1,1′-dialkyl-3,3′-ferrocenylenevi-nylene)s (2a-c) in quantitative yields, which were the molecular weights of 3000-10,000 and highly soluble in chloroform, benzene, and hexane. The electrical conductivity and the third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility for poly(1,1′-dihexyl-3,3′-ferrocenylenevinylene) (2b) were estimated to be 1 × 10-2 S/cm on doping with iodine and 1-4 × 10-12 esu at a wavelength of 1-2.4 μm, respectively. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
