    Notes: Subcellular distribution of c-myc oncogene product and EGF receptor in oral squamous cell carcinomas was examined by using immunohistochemical method. Immunohistochemy for c-myc oncogene showed three staining patterns. Reactive products were demonstrable in the nucleus, in the perinuclear cytoplasm with granular appearance and in the entire cytoplasm. Concomitant stainings of each reactive pattern were observed. Occasionally, the reactive product was strongly deposited on the chromatin under mitotic phase. EGF receptor positive cases were found in only 4 of 28 cases. Though reactive products were usually found in the cytoplasm, the cell surface staining was detected in the only one case. In this case, cells under mitotic phase were strongly stained. The fact that the strong staining both of c-myc and EGF receptor in cells under mitotic phase suggested the close relation between the expression of these genes and the proliferation of carcinoma cells.

    Notes: Immunohistochemical and ultrastructural findings in a rare case of papillary cystadenocarcinoma arising from the left sublingual gland of a 55-year-old Japanese man are reported. Histologically, the tumor tissue was found to be composed of various-sized cystic cavities in which papillary epithelial projections with thin fibrovascular cores were observed. The papillary projections consisted of a single layer to several layers of high columnar epithelial cells. Invasion to the surrounding fibrous tissue and into the lymphatics was observed, thus suggesting an aggressive potential in the present case. The possibility of the involvement of myoepithelial cells could be excluded based on the immunohistochemical and ultrastructural findings. The immunohistochemical and ultrastructural findings also suggested that this type of salivary gland tumor, at least the present case, may arise from striated or excretory ducts. There was positive immunostaining for tumor markers CA19-9 and CA125. However, the biological role of these carbohydrate antigens in salivary gland tumors is unclear at present. Further investigations are, therefore, called for to solve this issue.

It arises as the condition for preserving the connection matrix of linear q-difference equations, in close analogy with the monodromy-preserving deformation of linear differential equations. The continuous limit and special solutions in terms of q-hypergeometric functions are also discussed.

    Notes: Summary The distribution pattern of Leu-7 (HNK-1) in developing human embryonic hearts and rat hearts was studied by immunohistochemistry. Human and rat embryos at Streeter's stages XIII ∼ XX and fetus stage I were used. Leu-7, which is absent in the newborn rat heart, is expressed transiently in the embryo and fetus I stages. The earliest embryonic heart shows two incomplete circular structures with immunoreactivity in the myocardium along the primitive atrioventricular cushion and bulboventricular canal. These two structures become localized topographically in the definitive atrioventricular node and atrioventricular bundle after rearrangement and partial disappearance during embryonic development. At Streeter's stages XVIII ∼ XX, Leu-7 immunoreactivity appears to localize topographically in almost all the pathways of the conduction system, although some discontinuities are observed in the atrioventricular junction and atrial internodal tracts. Thereafter, immunoreactivity decreases gradually and differentially by site and stage. The precise nature of Leu-7 immunoreactive cells, that is, whether or not they are neurogenic or myogenic, is not revealed by this study. The present observations are discussed in connection with the hypothesis that specialized ring tissue is the primordium of the conduction system.

    Notes: Abstract This study investigated the minute distribution of both proliferating and non-proliferating cells, and cell death in the developing mouse lower first molars using 5-bromo-2′-deoxyuridine (BrdU) incorporation and the terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated deoxyuridine-5′-triphosphate (dUTP)-biotin nick end labeling (TUNEL) double-staining technique. The distribution pattern of the TUNEL-positive cells was more notable than that of the BrdU-positive cells. TUNEL-positive cells were localized in the following six sites: (1) in the most superficial layer of the dental epithelium during the initiation stage, (2) in the dental lamina throughout the period during which tooth germs grow after bud formation, (3) in the dental epithelium in the most anterior part of the antero-posterior axis of the tooth germ after bud formation, (4) in the primary enamel knot from the late bud stage to the late cap stage, (5) in the secondary enamel knots from the late cap stage to the late bell stage, and (6) in the stellate reticulum around the tips of the prospective cusps after the early bell stage. These peculiar distributions of TUNEL-positive cells seemed to have some effect on either the determination of the exact position of the tooth germ in the mandible or on the complicated morphogenesis of the cusps. The distribution of BrdU-negative cells was closely associated with TUNEL-positive cells, which thus suggested cell arrest and the cell death to be essential for the tooth morphogenesis.

    Notes: The stroma of the hematopoietic tissues includes a number of diverse cell types, i.e., bone-lining cells and related capsular and trabecular structures, epithelial-reticular cells and other epithelial cells, reticular cells, macrophages, and antigen-presenting cells. These stromal cells possess a variety of mechanical and metabolic functions. They support and confine the hematopoietic tissues and their vasculature. They regulate the migrations of blood and hematopoietic cells. Stromal cells contribute to the microenvironment that induces the differentiation of stem cells into the several blood-cell lines. The nature of the interactions of stromal and hematopoietic cells depends upon long- and short-range humoral factors, and upon such cell-surface compounds as immunoglobulins and major histocompatability antigens. Blood cells themselves, as neutrophils and lymphocytes, play regulatory roles in hematopoiesis along with stromal cells. Moreover, certain stromal cells, such as macrophages, originate as blood cells and have migratory phases. Distinctions between blood cells, their derivatives, and stromal cells may therefore be difficult to draw.
