Notes:
A set of global Proudman functions, computed on a 2° finite-difference grid, is used to smooth raw tidal estimates previously derived by Cartwright and Ray from a two-year analysis of Geosat altimeter data. The least-squares problem provides an interesting application of ridge regression and Hansen's L-curve analysis. The final smoothed maps are found to agree more closely to a set of 80‘ground-truth’constants than did the original tidal models.
