    Notes: Abstract. The aim of this randomized single-blind multicenter controlled clinical trial was to clinically evaluate the effectiveness of adjunctive local controlled drug delivery in the control of bleeding on probing in mandibular class II furcations during maintenance care. 127 patients presenting with a class II mandibular furcation with bleeding on probing were included in the study. They had been previously treated for periodontitis and were participating in supportive care programs in periodontal speciality practices. Treatments consisted of scaling and root planing with oral hygiene instructions (control) and scaling and root planing and oral hygiene combined with local controlled drug delivery with tetracycline fibers (test). The following outcomes were evaluated at baseline and 3 and 6 months after therapy at the furcation site: bleeding on controlled force probing (BOP), probing pocket depth (PD) and clinical attachment levels (CAL). Levels of oral hygiene and smoking status were also assessed. Both test and controls resulted in significant improvements of BOP and PD at 3 and 6 months. The test treatment, however, resulted in significantly better improvements: BOP decreased by 52% in the control group and by 70% in the test group at 3 months; at 6 months, however, the difference was no longer significant. The test treatment resulted in a 0.5 mm greater reduction of PD than the control at 3 months, the improvement was highly significant but its duration did not extend until the 6 months evaluation. No differences were observed in terms of changes in CAL. These data indicate that addition of tetracycline fibers to mechanical therapy alone resulted in improved control of periodontal parameters during periodontal maintenance of class II mandibular furcations. Short duration of the effect, however, requires further investigations to optimize conservative treatment of these challenging defects.

    Notes: Abstract— The fatigue and fracture mechanics properties of rapidly solidified ultra-high strength 7XXX series Al-alloys have been studied. With respect to conventional high-strength Al-alloys, these materials exhibited a better fatigue-endurance on both plain and notched specimens at low stress amplitude in constant amplitude fatigue tests, whereas the opposite occurred at high stress amplitudes. Fatigue crack growth tests indicated lower crack growth rates at low ΔK-levels, but at intermediate and high ΔK-values these materials were particularly prone to additional components of “static” crack propagation, which led to steeply inclined da/dN vs ΔK curves. Moreover, the increase in tensile strength was linked with some loss of ductility and fracture toughness. Overload regions were characterized by a large amount of intergranular decohesion, possibly facilitated by the presence of incoherent particles at grain boundary regions and by the large strength differential between the matrix and precipitate free zone. The best results in terms of elongation to rupture and toughness were obtained by reducing the amount of Cr/Mn incoherent dispersoid-forming elements, in order to lessen the tendency towards matrix-dispersoid interface decohesion at grain boundaries.

    Notes: Objectives: Complete root coverage is the primary objective to be accomplished when treating gingival recessions in patients with aesthetic demands. Furthermore, in order to satisfy patient demands fully, root coverage should be accomplished by soft tissue, the thickness and colour of which should not be distinguishable from those of adjacent soft tissue. The aim of the present split-mouth study was to compare the treatment outcome of two surgical approaches of the bilaminar procedure in terms of (i) root coverage and (ii) aesthetic appearance of the surgically treated sites.Material and Methods: Fifteen young systemically and periodontally healthy subjects with two recession-type defects of similar depth affecting contralateral teeth in the aesthetic zone of the maxilla were enrolled in the study. All recessions fall into Miller class I or II. Randomization for test and control treatment was performed by coin toss immediately prior to surgery. All defects were treated with a bilaminar surgical technique: differences between test and control sites resided in the size, thickness and positioning of the connective tissue graft. The clinical re-evaluation was made 1 year after surgery.Results: The two bilaminar techniques resulted in a high percentage of root coverage (97.3% in the test and 94.7% in the control group) and complete root coverage (gingival margin at the cemento-enamel junction (CEJ)) (86.7% in the test and 80% in the control teeth), with no statistically significant difference between them. Conversely, better aesthetic outcome and post-operative course were indicated by the patients for test compared to control sites.Conclusions: The proposed modification of the bilaminar technique improved the aesthetic outcome. The reduced size and minimal thickness of connective tissue graft, together with its positioning apical to the CEJ, facilitated graft coverage by means of the coronally advanced flap.

    Notes: Abstract The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship between the presence of bacteria on the tooth-facing surface of ePTFE barriers and the clinical outcome of membrane supported reconstructive periodontal surgery. 20 systemically healthy subjects affected by chronic periodontitis were enrolled. One tooth site per patient, associated with an angular bony defect and a probing attachment loss of 〉4 mm. was selected to be treated by means of a guided tissue regeneration procedure using an ePTFE barrier membrane. Antibiotics (Augmentin 1 g/day) for 2 weeks were prescribed. In addition to the use of chlorhexidine for post-surgical plaque control, all patients were recalled once a week for professional tooth cleaning. The barrier material was harvested for SEM analysis after 4–6 weeks. Professional tooth cleaning and reinforcement of selperformed oral hygiene measures were given at 1 month intervals after membrane removal. For each treated site, the difference in probing attachment loss between baseline examination and a follow-up examination after 6 months of healing was calculated. The results of the SEM-analysis revealed that bacterial colonization was evident in the collar area of all the retrieved membranes. In the mid part of the membranes 30 out of 60 microscopic fields (50%) demonstrated microbial colonization, and in the most apical part 9 out of 60 fiels (15%). Regression analysis indicated that gain in probing attachment level was positively-correlated to initial attachment loss and negatively correlated to microbial colonization of the mid part of the membranes. It was concluded that bacterial colonization in the mid part of the ePTFE membrane reduced the potential gain in probing attachment following GTR–therapy with almost 50%.

We use as input the 3-quark wave functions obtained in a Constituent Quark Model with three-body forces in the hypercentral approach. With respect to the non relativistic calculations a significant contribution is obtained up to Q 2≃ 2 (GeV/c)2. However, the low Q 2-behaviour exhibits a lack of strength, which may be connected with the need of taking into account explicitly further degrees of freedom beyond the three constituent quark ones.

    Notes: Abstract Relativistic corrections have been calculated for the Drell-Hearn-Gerasimov sum rule in the framework of the constituent-quark model. These corrections lead to additional absorption strength due to relativistic dipole currents in the case of a hyperfine interaction. The introduction of anomalous magnetic moments requires a subtraction of the dispersion integral at infinity. The additional effects of such anomalous moments, however, are numerically very small within the model.
