Notes: Abstract The effect of radiation on the combined free and forced convection flow of an electrical conducting viscous fluid through an open-ended vertical channel in slip flow regime and permeated by a constant magnetic field in transverse direction has been considered. The temperature on the walls has been supposed to vary linearly with distance. On the assumption of optically thin limit, the expressions for velocity, induced magnetic field, temperature, flow rate and the heat transfer coefficient due to thermal conduction are obtained and the influence of radiation on these solutions are shown either graphically or in tabulated forms.

Notes: Abstract The two-dimensional flow of an incompressible, viscous electrically conducting fluid through a porous medium bounded by an infinite porous plate and subject to a uniform external magnetic field is treated. The mean velocity, the fluctuating parts of the velocity, the transient velocity, the amplitude and the phase of the skin friction, and the wall temperature are shown graphically and followed by discussions.

Notes: Abstract Hydromagnetic turbulent shear flow of viscous, incompressible, electrically conducting fluid between two infinite uniformly porous moving parallel planes in the presence of axial and transverse magnetic field has been studied by the semi-empirical method. The expressions for the mean distributions for velocity and magnetic field for turbulent shear flow have been obtained for both the cases. As particular cases, the results have been obtained if the planes are fixed. The solutions obtained when the magnetic field is axial have been shown graphically for turbulent and laminar flows.

Notes: Abstract An accelerating magnetohydrodynamic laminar flow of an electrically conducting fluid under the influence of gravity and in presence of transverse magnetic field is investigated in the paper. Using a cubic polynomial for the velocity profile inside the boundary layer, the momentum integral equation is solved numerically by Runge-Kutta method to determine the boundary layer thickness and the corresponding film thickness is then calculated for the entrance region. The effect of magnetic field on these solutions is shown in graphical form.

Notes: Abstract The problem of steady two-dimensional laminar flow in slip flow regime of a viscous incompressible and electrically conducting fluid through an inclined channel of rectangular cross-section in presence of a transverse magnetic field has been considered. The walls of the channel are assumed to have prescribed temperatures and finite conductivities. The expressions for the velocity component, induced magnetic field and the temperature are obtained and their numerical results are shown graphically.

Notes: Abstract Slow flow of a conducting fluid past a non-conducting porous sphere of variable permeability in presence of a uniform radial magnetic field is studied. The drag experienced by the sphere is shown graphically and compared to that for a non-conducting fluid.

Notes: Abstract On the basis of Biot's theory the two-dimensional problem of deformation of a semi-infinite porous elastic medium, the bounding surface of which is subjected to an arbitrary pressure is considered by the use of stress function and Laplace-Fourier integral transforms. Solutions are obtained for the case that the upper boundary is either permeable or impermeable. As an example, the distribution of stresses and the consolidation settlement have been obtained when a uniform load is applied on one half of the surface, the remaining half being unloaded. The consolidation settlement is evaluated numerically for the permeable case only and is exhibited graphically. The solution of the problem of constant strip load considered by earlier workers has also been deduced.
