    Notes: Radial distribution analysis studies by X-ray diffraction of carbon blacks obtained by pyrolysis of benzene C6H6, toluene, C7H8, and sucrose, C12H22O11, and samples of ultracarbon of the medicinal variety have been carried out. Bonding distances, coordination numbers and the layer dimensions have been determined. It has been observed that the carbon blacks have turbostratic structures. The C-C distances in the carbon layers lie in the range of that for aromatic rings and double bonds. Ultracarbon has the C-C bonding distance corresponding to graphite.

    Notes: Abstract Mechanical properties and fracture of melt-blended poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) and epoxidized natural rubber (ENR) having 50 mol % epoxidation level are studied at different compositions. The effect of blend ratio on tensile strength, tear strength, elongation at break, tension set after failure, and hardness are determined. The stress-strain behaviour of low ENR blends exhibits yielding and necking, whereas that of high ENR blends exhibits soft elastomeric deformation. At higher compositions of ENR, plots of tensile strength, tear strength, and hardness against blend composition are concave in nature; and plots of the elongation at break deviate markedly from the additive value with a pronounced maximum occurring at the 70wt% composition of ENR. The scanning electron microscopic examination of fracture surfaces of blends does not show any features of phase separation of ENR or PVC. The tensile fracture surface of rigid PVC exhibits partially fused particle structures of PVC and that of blends exhibits features of shearing and horizontal discontinuous striations. The torn surface of rigid PVC shows evidence of intrinsic crazing and that of blends shows features of shear fibrils, vertically changed discontinuous striations, steps, and unstable and stable tear fronts.

    Notes: Abstract A study on the tensile and tear failure of miscible blends of plasticized poly (vinyl chloride), PVC, and epoxidized natural rubber (ENR) was carried out. Fractographs were taken in a scanning electron microscope in order to obtain an insight into the failure mechanism of the samples. It was found that low ENR blends failed by shearing in tensile testing, and they exhibited irregular stick-slip deformation and characteristics like vulcanizates in tear testing. Blends of plasticized PVC and ENR were more flexible than the individual components. As a result of the geometrical effect the tear fracture surface has rougher features than the tensile fracture surface. Sinusoidal wavy tear patterns in the form of a typical sine wave and rectified half sine wave of the fracture surface are characteristic features of tear resistant non-vulcanizates of rubber-like materials. Moreover, the study revealed that there were no features of phase separation of PVC and ENR due to incompatibility at any of the fracture surfaces examined.

    Notes: A systematic study of the process variables for polyester composites based on different natural fibers like jute, sisal, ramie, and pineapple has been made with a view to determine the most suitable processing conditions for such composites. Effect of polyesteramide polyol (PEAP) as interfacial agent in such composites has also been discussed. Fracture modes of jute/polyester (JP) composite sample having different fiber volume fractions have been examined by scanning electron microscope (SEM). Fracture surfaces of untreated and PEAP-treated JP composite samples have been examined in SEM, both before and after 72 h immersion in boiling water, to study the nature of interfacial bonding on fiber treatment with PEAP. A qualitative improvement in bonding in case of PEAP-treated JP composites is evident from SEM photomicrographs. This is also supported by physicomechanical properties of the composite samples.

    Notes: Miscible blends from plasticized poly(vinyl chloride), and epoxidized natural rubber having 50 mol% epoxidation level were prepared in a Brabender Plasticorder by the melt-mixing technique. Changes in Brabender torque and temperature, density, dynamic mechanical properties, and differential scanning calorimetry of the samples were examined as a function of blend composition. The plasticized poly(vinyl chloride)/epoxidized natural rubber blends behaved as a compatible system at all composition ranges as evident from their single glass-rubber transition temperature (Tg) obtained from dynamic mechanical analysis as well as from differential scanning calorimetry. Profound changes in the nature of the glass-rubber transition were noted with respect to blend composition. The Tg-width values of blends lie between those of plasticized poly(vinyl chloride) and epoxidized natural rubber.

    Notes: Polyesteramide polyols have been synthesized by melt condenstion using a mixture of alkanolamines, polyethylene glycols, and dicarboxylic acids/anhydrieds, and the behavior or resin samples as interfacrial agents in unidirectional as well as random composites of jute/epoxy and jute/polyester has been evaluated. Mechanical properties of these composties with or without interfacial agents have been determined along with the effect of water uptake on such properties. The incorporation of polyesteramide polyol (PEAP) resins as interfacila agents has been found to significantly improcve the mechanical properties of jute fiber composites. It has also been found that increasing the hydroxyl value of PEAP results in a better bonding of the composities up to a certain optimum limit of hydroxyl value beyond which the molecular weight of the interfacila agent as well as its bonding strenght decreases. Use of PEAP resin of optimum hydroxyl value and molecular weight also significantly improves the water resistance capacities of jute/epoxy composites.

Die ENR-Komponente wurde dabei teilweise vernetzt, ohne die Verträglichkeit der beiden Blendbestandteile zu beeinträchtigen. Andererseits nahm die Mikroheterogenität durch verbesserte Grenzflächenadhäsion ab. Die dynamische Vulkanisation verbesserte die Elastizität und die thermische Stabilität der Blends.
    Notes: Poly(vinyl chloride)/epoxidized natural rubber (PVC/ENR) miscible blends were vulcanized “dynamically” by N,N′-m-phenylene dimaleimide during the melt blending process. ENR component in the blend was partially crosslinked in this process. Miscibility of the blend components was not impaired. On the other hand the microheterogeneity between ENR and PVC was reduced due to the improved interfacial adhesion. Dynamically vulcanized PVC/ENR blends improved the elastic deformation. Thermal stability was greatly improved in blends due to the dimaleimide vulcanization process.

    Notes: A study on the melt elasticity behavior and extrudate characteristics of melts of rigid poly(vinyl chloride), PVC, and rigid poly(vinyl chloride)/epoxidized natural rubber (ENR) miscible blends were conducted. Extrusion studies were carried out in a capillary rheometer and examinations of the surface characteristics of the extrudate were made by taking photomicrographs in a scanning electron microscope. The anomalous behavior in the die swell ratio of rigid PVC arising from the particle agglomerates continued in its blends up to 50 wt% composition of ENR. Temperature independence for high ENR blends was noted for the principal normal stress difference and elastic shear modulus, when shear stress was held constant. Recoverable shear strain and die swell ratio behaved identically in terms of blend composition and processing temperature. Factors which control the extrudate distortion and melt fracture of the melts of rigid PVC/ENR systems were fusion of particle agglomerates and strength of melts. Diamond cavitations were typical of the extrudate surface of PVC melts as those of the fracture surface of the tensile failure of PVC. Conditions to obtain a smooth extrudate surface of rigid PVC melts in blends with ENR have been found to be the low ENR content, low shear rate, or stress and high processing temperature.
