Notes: The Stark components of the lower-lying manifolds of Nd3+ in Ba0.25Mg2.75Y2Ge3O12 have been characterized using the well-resolved emission spectra for the 4F3/2→4I9/2 and 4F3/2→4I11/2 transitions at 300 K. The emission cross sections of these intermanifold transitions as well as the inter-Stark transitions of R1→X5 at 940.4 nm and of R2→Y3 at 1061.8 nm have been determined. Finally, these results are compared with those of the standard laser host, Nd:YAG, and the potential of Nd:BAMGAR as a laser host is discussed. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Quantitative calculations show that numerous spin-forbidden linear optical transitions observed in trivalent rare earth ions acquire a major fraction of their intensity from hitherto neglected contributions involving spin–orbit linkages within excited configurations. Motivated by the importance of analogous linkages previously demonstrated in two-photon absorption, we derive a general expression applicable for all lN→lN transitions which can be incorporated into a revised Judd–Ofelt analysis of observed intensities. Presenting this revised analysis of observed linear absorption intensities for Gd3+ and Eu3+, we show that the new contribution is often comparable to standard contributions. With substantial modification of previously fitted phenomenological parameters, an improved fit to observed intensities is achieved, suggesting that reanalysis of linear intensity data for all trivalent rare earths is warranted.

Notes: We expand upon recent quantitative calculations which show that numerous parity- and spin-forbidden linear optical transitions observed in trivalent rare earth ions acquire a major fraction of their intensity from hitherto neglected contributions involving spin–orbit linkages within excited configurations. Extending our revised analysis of observed linear absorption intensities for Gd3+ and Eu3+ to the other nine trivalent lanthanides with visible wavelength transitions, we find that the new contributions are at least as important in these other lanthanides, and are often comparable to standard contributions. We also show that spin-forbidden ΔS=1 transitions are selectively modified over the spin-allowed ΔS=0 transitions. In addition, we examine contributions from linkages with g orbital excited states in the light of recent electronic Raman scattering data for lanthanide phosphates, and show that these long neglected terms may actualy dominate the transition intensity. With substantial modification of previously fitted phenomenological parameters, however, the good fit with observed intensities is retained.

Notes: The true stress-true strain behavior of polyoxymethylene, n(-CH2O), as an example of a bulk semi-crystalline polymer, has been investigated for constant hydrostatic environmental pressures from 1 atmosphere to 8 kilobars with the principal objectives of elucidating the factors controlling flow and fracture. Experiments were conducted in uniaxial tension at room temperature and constant strain rate. The tensile observations were supplemented by measurements of bulk compressibility and stress relaxation behavior at pressure. In contrast with metals and inorganic compounds, the modulus, yield stress and fracture stress of POM increase strongly with pressure by a factor of approximately three at 8 kilobars. The modulus increase is shown from the stress relaxation measurements to be associated with a pressure-induced increase in the β-transition temperature which points to the potential usefulness of the concept of pressure-temperature super-position of mechanical behavior. The characteristics of the pressure dependence of the yield stress demonstrate that yield criteria based on continum mechanics considerations, including the Mohr or Coulomb-Navier criterion, are not valid for general deformation (non-plane strain) conditions in this polymer. The concept of a critical volume change determining the initiation of yielding is suggested to be applicable to semi-crystalline polymers. Comparison with analogous changes in yield stress with temperature points to an increasing contribution to the control of yielding by the initially disordered regions with increasing pressure or decreasing temperature. The fracture behavior observed at pressure eliminates the concepts of a critical stress as a fracture criterion for POM and of a simple reduction in normal stress at points of stress concentration as the principal effect of the applied pressure on fracture.

Notes: Jute stick was bleached with sodium chlorite and alkaline hydrogen peroxide solutions. The infrared (IR) spectra of bleached samples and jute stick were analyzed and compared. The bleached samples were characterized by higher absorbance intensity ratios (Av/A2900) of the bands attributed to hemicellulose. Among the bleached samples the chlorite-bleached sample showed higher intensity for the bands mentioned. The bands attributed to lignin are either absent or very weak in the chlorite-bleached jute stick as compared to that of peroxide-bleached jute stick, although some residual lignin was present in the substrate. The 1635 cm-1 band attribute to the vibration of adsorbed water molecules in the noncrystalline regions in cellulose appears as a sharp peak in chlorite-bleached jute stick and as a shoulder in peroxide-bleached jute stick. This can be attributed to the difference in the nature of the two bleaching processes.
