    Notes: The influence of water temperature and water oxygenation on the specific antibody response was evaluated by indirect ELISA in sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.) immunized against human-γ- globulins emulsified in Freund's complete adjuvant. A higher antibody response was observed in fish reared at 24 and 30 °C, than at 12 and 18 °C. For the fish group reared at 24 °C, the immunological observation was carried out until 300 days after immunization. At the end of this period, fish kept at 24 °C still showed immunological competence, although the antibody response began to decrease significantly from 120 days after the immunization. Fish reared under mild hyperoxia and normoxia conditions had higher antibody responses than fish reared under mild hypoxia conditions. Moreover, at the end of the experimental period of 56 days the antibody response of fish reared under hyperoxia conditions was significantly higher than the immune response detected in fish reared under normoxia and hypoxia conditions.

    Notes: Supersaturation of surface water with atmospheric gases may result from hydroelectric or thermoelectric power generation and adversely affect aquatic biota. Although the phenomenon has been extensively studied in the northwestern United States, its occurrence is less well documented in Europe. We evaluated the tolerance of carp, Cyprinus carpio, and black bullhead, Ictalurus melas, from Italy to gas supersaturated water and compared our results to data reported in the literature for the same species from the Columbia River, U.S.A. Carp and black bullhead from Italy were more susceptible to gas supersaturation than those from the Columbia River. This may reflect greater adaptation of Columbia River fish due to their historical exposure to supersaturated water resulting from numerous hydroelectric dams.

    Notes: The total respiratory surface area (RSA) of sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax (initial mass 153 ± 27 g), reared in a brackish water recirculation system at 24° C for 3 months under three different oxygen partial pressures of 60, 90 and 140% saturation (87.0, 130.0 and 203.1 torr. respectively), was 351.98 (± 8.90), 264.86 (± 48.20) and 212.90 (± 57.22) mm2 g−1 body mass. RSA was negatively correlated with oxygen availability in the water. In the same experiment, no significant differences in the total length of filaments or frequency of lamellae were observed, although the total length of filaments was shorter in fish cultured under hyperoxia.

    Notes: Italian aquaculture has peaked at a production of 245 000 t in 1998, mainly due to mussel and clam production. In the case of finfish production, although freshwater fish production is stable, euryhaline fish production is constantly growing, reaching more than 14 000 t in 1998. With regard to the legal framework which regulates aquaculture activity and protects the environment, Law no. 152, which implements ECC Directive 91/271 and ECC Directive 91/676, was promulgated in 1999. This law replaces Law no. 319 of 1976, Law no. 130 of 1992, Law no. 131 of 1992 and other related laws. The final objective to be achieved by these laws, is to be able to describe each water body with ‘good’ water quality status by the end of 2016, but by the end of 2008 each single water body should be rated as having ‘sufficient’ status. There is no legislation regarding food control in Italy. With regard to the use of veterinary chemicals and authorizations for the registration of new drugs, Legislative Act no. 119 of 1992, implementing ECC Directive 81/852, ECC Directive 87/20 and ECC Directive 90/676, Legislative Act no. 66 of 1993, Legislative Act no. 110 of 1995 and Legislative Act no. 47 of 1997 were promulgated in order to control the use of drugs in reared animals, with the primary aim being protection of the health of human consumers.

    Notes: The aim of this study was to determine the vitamin C status of various tissues, and collagen concentration in cartilage, of a sterlet (Acipenser ruthenus L.) x Siberian sturgeon (Acipenser baerii Brandt) hybrid fed different dietary vitamin C rations. Growth, vitamin C status and collagen concentration were measured in groups fed diets supplemented with 150, 300, 600 mg.kg-1 ascorbate-2-polyphosphate (APP); 100, 200, 400 mg.kg-1 ascorbate-2-monophosphate (AMP), 1000 mg.kg-1 L-ascorbic acid (AA) and with an almost ascorbate free diet (Total AA 〉 5 mg.kg-1), as a control.No significant differences in growth were observed, and no external symptoms of scurvy developed in the vitamin C-free group. No reduction in total vitamin C concentration was revealed in the tissues examined, as compared with initial concentrations. Ascorbate-2-phosphate esters were only found in kidney or hepatopancreas of fish fed with these vitamin C derivatives. Significantly (p〈0.05) lower contents of collagen were observed in the control group after 8 weeks feeding. No significant differences were found among the groups after 16 weeks although the collagen concentration in the cartilage was slightly lower in the control group without vitamin C supplementation.

    Notes: Abstract The transfer of L-ascorbic acid (AA) from broodstock to the fertilised eggs and it's dynamics in embryos and fasting larvae, has been studied in sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.) and sea bream (Sparus aurata L.). Two types of diets were fed to the broodstocks: one containing sufficient ascorbate for normal growth and the other with an extra addition of a very high dose (2,000 mg/kg feed) of ethyl-cellulose-coated L-ascorbic acid. The concentration of AA and total ascorbate (L-ascorbic acid plus dehydroascorbic acid) was detected through several embryo and larval development stages, including larvae just before feeding. In sea bass and sea bream, the mean (SD) concentration of total ascorbate in fertilised eggs originating from broodstock fed AA supplemented diet, was 218.5 (17.7) and 122.4 (5.1) μg/g wet weight respectively. This was significantly higher (P 〈 0.01) than the unsupplemented groups, which contained only 155.9 (6.9) and 103.9 (3.5) μg/g wet weight respectively. A diet with a vitamin C content adequate for normal growth, may not be sufficient for broodstock when the goal is transfer of TAA to embryos. © Rapid Science Ltd. 1998

    Notes: Abstract Gas diffusion distance (GDD) of sea bass was measured in fish bred under farm conditions, at different dissolved oxygen concentrations (DO): normoxia condition (80–100% of the saturation value) and `mild' hyperoxia condition (120–130% of the saturation value). Measures were carried out two times in a year (beginning of summer and autumn) in order to evaluate the effect of water temperature on GDD at the two different dissolved oxygen concentrations. There was a significant influence of both dissolved oxygen concentration (p ≤0.001) and environmental temperature (p ≤0.001) on GDD. In summertime it was 1.75 μm and 2.31 μm for fish reared under normoxia and hyperoxia, respectively, and in autumn 2.51 μm and 2.96 μm for fish reared under normoxia and hyperoxia, respectively. When DO was reduced at the higher temperatures, GDD decreased as well. Results lead to the conclusion that GDD increased with the increasing of DO, both due to reduced water temperature and to the mild oxygen hypersaturation following application of pure oxygen. The advantage for fish may be found in the compromise between maximising O2 diffusion at the gills and ions/water intake/loss, known as `osmoregulatory compromise'.
