Notes: Phase separation in a sol–gel process of SiO2–ZrO2 in the presence of polyethylene oxide is investigated. An amorphous gel with interconnected macroporous morphology is obtained when phase separation and sol–gel transition concur to fix a transitional structure of spinodal decomposition. Macropore size, together with connectivity of the pores and gel skeleton, can be controlled precisely by selecting an appropriate starting composition for preparation at a zirconium content ≤11.7 mol%. The macroporous gel retains additional mesopores 〈4 nm and exhibits typical bimodal pore size distribution. The addition of ZrO2 in SiO2 improves the thermal stability of both macroporous and mesoporous structures.

Notes: Previously, we revealed that hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) or an HGF-like factor secreted by periodontal ligament fibroblasts (PLF) and gingival fibroblasts cultured in the presence of serum was a major chemoattractant for gingival epithelial cells, and suggested that it might play a role in epithelial invasion. However, our recent study showed that serum-free culture of PLF and gingival fibroblasts produced potent chemoattractants other than HGF for gingival epithelial cells. To identify these chemoattractants, PLF-conditioned medium (PLF-CM) from serum-free cultures was obtained, concentrated, and separated by gel filtration column chromatography, and the chemotactic activity for gingival epithelial cells of each eluted fraction was monitored by a modified Boyden chamber assay. The chemoattractant activity was eluted at a molecular mass of around 600 kDa, which would include laminin and fibronectin, but not HGF, determined by ELISA. The chemotactic activity was reduced by treatment with antilaminin and/or antifibronectin polyclonal antibodies. Western blots using both antibodies revealed that the PLF-CM contained laminin- and fibronectin-like molecules. Along with HGF, these large glycoprotein molecules produced by PLF may be involved in the pathogenesis and progression of periodontitis by inducing the apical migration of epithelial cells.

Notes: [Auszug] Combining experimental and simulation data to describe all of the structures and the pathways involved in folding a protein is problematical. Transition states can be mapped experimentally by φ values, but the denatured state is very difficult to analyse under conditions that favour ...

Notes: Abstract This paper aims at listing and evaluating the status of all the research and development (R&D) tasks necessary for the construction of a safe and environmentally benign fusion experimental reactor. At this time, it is not possible to define precisely the R&D tasks necessary for the licensing approval and those that are useful in improving safety but not necessarily required for licensing because the licensing procedure itself is still being discussed. Among the R&D tasks, the most important are considered to be those related to tritium safety, namely, those effective in reducing the uncertainty in tritium inventory in the plasma facing components and blanket, uncertainty in tritium permeation and leakage, and those to clarify tritium behavior in the containment and in the environment. The R&D tasks with second priority are judged to be those related to mobilization of the activation products such as activated erosion dust or the corrosion products. The volatilization of structural metal caused by the oxidation at high temperature seems to be highly unlikely but some experiments are needed to assure that this is the case.

Notes: Abstract Mesoporous titania with regulated pore size as well as high specific surface area was prepared from titanium alkoxide and various carboxylic acids with different alkyl-chain length [CH3(CH2) n COOH : n = 0–20]. Although the pore size and pore volume of titania changed slightly at n 〈 10, they increased with increasing the alkyl-chain length of carboxylic acid at n ≥ 10. Each carboxylic acid forms a complex with titanium alkoxide in an organic-inorganic precursor, while the precursor prepared by using carboxylic acid with n ≥ 10 consists of a lamella-type mesophase. The interplanar distance of the lamella structure increases with increasing the alkyl-chain length of carboxylic acid. During calcination, the lamella structure collapses together with the combustion of organic moieties and titania particles crystallized to anatase aggregate to provide pores. Although carboxylic acid does not act as a true template, the formation of the lamella-type mesophase in the precursor plays an important role in controlling the pore size of titania.

Notes: Abstract Structural formation process of Ni/SiO2 and Cu/SiO2 catalysts prepared by solution exchange of wet silica gel was investigated. Microstructures of Cu/SiO2 and Ni/SiO2 were quite different from each other. In the case of Cu/SiO2, Cu particles with diameter of ca. 3–5 nm dispersed homogeneously at less Cu content, and the particle size of Cu as well as pore size of silica gel support increased with increasing Cu content. In the Ni/SiO2, the Ni particles with diameter of ca. 6–10 nm gathered densely to form aggregates in silica matrix resulting in sea-island structure, whereas the size of Ni particle slightly increased with increasing Ni content. The difference in the structure of the metal-silica composites is probably caused by the difference in interaction between silica gel network and metal ions during drying and heating processes.

Notes: Abstract The ADCP data obtained in the Tsushima Strait in the period from February 1987 to November 1990 on board twelve patrol vessels and one research vessel belonging to Maritime Safety Agency was analyzed. Total amount of the data is 200,053, but after quality check, we used 158,401 data for the analysis of the current field and its variability in the strait. The seasonal variation of the currents had been believed to be large. However, no direct current observation throughout the season had been made, and the knowledge on the seasonal variation was derived indirectly from the data of the sea level difference across the strait and of the density field given by hydrographic observations. ADCP data indicates that the seasonal variation of the current field is considerably small in all sub-regions. In the relatively strong current region to the west of the Tsushima Island, the northeast current component has maximum value in the early winter season.
