Notes: Negative-mass (space-charge) instability in magnetized electron beams is considered for a flat, thin (having a thickness about the cyclotron diameter) beam of weakly relativistic electrons oscillators. Pitch angle and energy spreads of particles, as well as magnetic tapering are investigated on the base of averaged differential-integral equations of electron motion. For the energy spread, the phenomenon of "phase mixing'' of particles rotating with different frequencies limits the number of cyclotron harmonics taking part in the instability and significantly decreases the increments. For the magnetic tapering, this effect leads to linear saturation at the length comparable with the characteristic scale of the tapering. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: For a free-electron oscillator, problems of mode dynamics are studied for a case when the feedback has a wide, but finite band (the feedback coefficient depends on the frequency). It is shown that even a broadband frequency-dispersive feedback can significantly affect both the electron-current threshold of stability of the single-mode operation and the process of frequency tuning. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract The formation of an electron beam in a magnetron-injector gun of a gyrotron is investigated in the case when it is affected by the negative-mass instability due to the Coulomb repulsion and nonisochronous cyclotron rotation of particles. A technique is proposed for calculating the spread of the initial energy of electrons caused by the instability, which develops as the electron beam moves in the presence of a nonuniform magnetostatic field of the magnetron-injector gun. It is demonstrated that this instability can be one of the main factors providing the energy spread in electron guns of gyrotrons.

Notes: Abstract Excitation of transverse parasitic modes at the frequency of the operating mode in free-electron masers is considered. The influence of parasitic field on the starting current of the autooscillator with a low-quality cavity as well as the phenomenon of suppression of the total parasitic field by the operating one in the regime of its saturation are investigated.

Notes: Abstract The simplest elementary source of RF space-charge field in the form of a helix rotating with the frequency of the operating wave is proposed. The use of these sources (mutually interacting) allows one to describe the main space-charge effects for different varieties of CRMs in both linear and nonlinear regimes. It is shown that, like in the subrelativistic gyrotron, due to development of the quasielectrostatic negative-mass instability, the space charge increases the increment in the amplifier and decreases the starting current in the oscillator.

Notes: Abstract The negative-mass (space-charge) instability is studied within the model of a flat thin electron beam moving along the stationary uniform magnetic field in the case of nonsymmetrical perturbations. It is shown that due to the phenomenon of "phase mixing" of electron bunches the instability increments are small for perturbations with spatial scales smaller than the Larmor diameter.

Notes: Abstract A relatively high level of the minimal electron energy at the gyrotron output even at very large spread in pitch factor is explained. An estimation of the recuperation efficiency, which can be obtained due to this effect, is given.
