    Notes: Young-of-the-year Pseudopleuronectes americanus were captured in Sandy Hook Bay, New Jersey and maintained in aquaria at 16–19° C for 115 days in 1982 and 127 days in 1983. Half of them were experimentally exposed to Glugea stephani and the others were sham exposed. During the course of these experiments fish from both groups died as a result of G. stephani infection, demonstrating Glwgea-induced mortality in this species. Infections were found in both control and experimentally exposed fish. Mortality of Glwgea-infected fish in the exposed group was 63% while that in the controls was 28.5%.

    Notes: Abstract A Bacillus thuringiensis isolate has been discovered which is toxic to the common housefly (Musca domestica) as well as other Diptera and Lepidoptera. Crystal δ-endotoxins purified from this isolate killed 50% of Musca larvae at a concentration of 10.2 μg/ml, and β-exotoxin was not detected. Sodium dodecyl polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of the purified crystals revealed three protein species which were related to CryIA(b), CryIB and CryIIA toxins on the basis of immunoreactivity and amino-terminal sequence determination. Southern blot and DNA restriction analyses suggested that the strain has sequences related to one cryIA(b), one cryIIA, and two cryIIB genes.

    Notes: Abstract Gills of adult rock crabs,Cancer irroratus Say, collected near a sewage disposal site in the New York Bight apex were analyzed for copper, lead, cadmium, and silver. One gill from each animal was processed for histologic study to document pathological conditions within the tissues, and the presence or absence of fouling organisms on gill surfaces. Comparisons are made between metal concentrations in rock crab gills and published data on crustaceans from other locations.

    Notes: Abstract Observations of internal waves were made at the Malin shelf edge during SESAME (Shelf Edge Studies Acoustic Measurement Experiment), a part of the NERC LOIS-SES experiment, in August-September 1996. These measurements provide a high resolution dataset demonstrating internal wave generation and propagation. This note presents observations of the evolution of an internal bore. The process is shown clearly in a sequence of thermistor chain tows across the shelf break covering a complete tidal cycle, as the double-sided bore transforms into a group of undulations and eventually into more distinct solitary waveforms. Current structures associated with the bore and waves were also observed by ship-mounted ADCP. Analysis of the waveforms in terms of the linear modes and empirical orthogonal functions (EOFs) indicate the dominance of the first mode, which is typical of a shallow water seasonal thermocline environment. Determination of the phase speed of the waves from the consecutive ship surveys enabled the Doppler shift in the towed data to be removed, allowing analysis of the real length scales of the waves. The bore evolution has been modelled using a first order non-linear KdV model for the first mode, initialised with the waveform in the first survey. Comparison of the model and the observations show close agreement in the amplitudes, length scales, phase speeds and separations of the leading internal waves as they evolve. Finally, analysis of the observed internal wave shapes indicates that, within the uncertainties of measurement, the wave-lengths lie between those predicted by first and second order soliton theory.

    Notes: To evaluate the effects of regular flushing, water from fifty emergency eyewash and shower stations was cultured for the presence of potentially pathogenic protozoa, heterotrophic bacteria, and Legionella species. This study also provided the opportunity to evaluate a commercially available molecular assay for the direct detection of Legionella sp in environmental samples. The Perkin Elmer Legionella EnviroAmp polymerase chain reaction (PCR) kit and culture on buffered charcoal yeast extract agar were used to detect Legionella species in water samples. Chemical and physical parameters of station water measured included: pH, hardness, alkalinity, turbidity, conductivity, total chlorine and assimilable organic carbon. Protozoal isolates were identified by classical identification methods, and isolates from the stations were identified as Hartmannella sp, Vexillifera sp, Vahlkampfia sp, Acanthamoeba sp, and Vanella sp. Heterotrophic plate counts ranged from 102 to 106 CFU ml−1 and acridine orange total counts ranged from 103 to 106 cells ml−1 after regular flushing. PCR and gene probe analysis showed that 89% of the stations (eyewash and shower) were positive for Legionella species by PCR, while 6% of the samples were culture positive. These results indicate that routine flushing alone is not sufficient to control microbial contamination and disinfection must also be included in a routine maintenance program. In addition, regular maintenance, disinfection, and monitoring of emergency eyewash and shower stations is important in preventing potential secondary microbial infections by either direct inoculation or aerosol transmission.
