Notes: Summary A marked decrease in the content of various amino acids was observed when the boron concentration was increased from 0.5 to 2.0 ppm particularly at low value of SAR and low level of conductivity. At medium level of conductivity alongwith low level of boron increase in value of SAR definitely suppressed the content of lysine, arginine plus histidine, aspartic acid plus glutamine, threonine plus alanine, proline and cystine in plants. Increase in levels of conductivity specially at low value of SAR and low level of boron substantially affected the content of lysine, arginine plus histidine, aspartic acid plus glutamine, threonine plus alanine, proline and cystine.

Notes: Summary Chlorinated insecticidesviz p,p′-DDT, aldrin, endrin and lindane stimulated the synthesis of arginine+histidine, leucine, lysine, proline, and tyrosine in maize but decreased the content of tryptophan. However, synthesis of methionine was stimulated by the application of aldrin, endrin, and lindane only. On the otherhand, synthesis of valine was inhibited by aldrin, endrin and DDT only.

Notes: Summary Detailed soil survey of some saline-alkali tracts on the right main canal areas of chambal river in Kota/Rajasthan/India was conducted and the experiments were laid on 3 sites having medium to heavy texture and different salinity regimes. The hybrid maize (Ganga-3) seeds were soaked for 24 hours in four concentration solutions (50, 100, 200 and 300 ppm) of Indole-acetic-acid (IAA) and sown in the experimental plots to study the effect on the yields and uptake of nutrients. The results indicated significant improvement in the grain and stalk yield and uptake of nitrogen, phosphorus, potash, calcium plus magnesium while significant decrease in the uptake of sodium with the use of IAA especially under saline conditions. Iron, however, also decreased which warrents attention when using this techanique. The study emphasize the use of appropriate hormonal concentration for achieving beneficial results.

Notes: Summary A coordinated approach for designation of the soil phosphorus supply potential has been worked out using capacity, intensity and rate of release factors together. This approach has given more significant correlations with crop (wheat) yield. It is suggested that soil testing services should also determine rate of release and intensity characteristics of a soil while making recommendations to the farmers.

Notes: Summary Acid gradient elution technique was used at three stages with low, medium and high acid concentrations (N/10, 5 N and 10 N HCl) successively to dissolve phosphorus components of varying solubility. Chittor soil and sand each mixed with tricalcium phosphate and ferrous phosphate were eluted by this technique. It has been possible to roughly demarcate the peaks of Al, Fe and Ca bound phosphates in the gradient elution curves. Chittor and Udaipur soils (untreated) soils leached with 1 N NH4Cl solution and various residues left after extraction by Chang and Jackson's procedure were subjected to similar three stage acid gradient elution. Results have clearly indicated that the extraction procedure with successive extractants produces secondary reaction products. An examination of three stage acid gradient elution curves and relevant data has been carried out.

Notes: Abstract A total of 8579 Salmonella strains received during 1973–1982 were tested for their antibiogram patterns against nine routinely used antibiotics including gentamicin. Of these, 380 strains (4.4%) showed resistance to gentamicin at levels of 10 μg/ml and above. A high degree of resistance to gentamicin was recorded in 1979 (18.7%) and 1980 (9.4%). M.I.C. levels of strains received during 1982 were determined and it was found that some strains had levels as high as 160 μg/ml. The comparative results of gentamicin resistance from 1973 to 1982 are presented and the public health significance of the alarming increase in two years (1979–1980) is discussed.

Notes: Abstract A phage-typing system ofSalmonella bareilly based on lysogeny is presented. In the present study which comprised 378 strains, fifteen different phage types named ‘a’ through ‘o’ were established. With this system 70.3% of the strains could be typed by using five indicator strains.

Notes: Summary Twelve different chemical extraction procedures for extracting soil manganese were used. Soil test values determined for fourteen representative soil samples of Rajasthan State with manganese uptake by six crop species have shown that of the extractants used, 3N ammonium dihydrogen orthophosphate can be best used for estimating plant available soil manganese.
