    Description / Table of Contents: Abstract LetH be a Hilbert space with norm ‖ ‖ and scalar product (,). Let ϕ n ,n=0, 1, 2, ... andf be elements εH, i, s integers and λ〉0 such that: 1) ∥ϕ n ∥=1,2)(ϕ f ),ϕ k )=0 for ∣j−k∣ 〉s, 3) ∣(ϕ f ,ϕ n )∣ ≤ λ forj ≠k, 4) (f,ϕ f =0 forj〉i. Letf n andf * be the projections off onto the closed subspaces spanned by ϕ0,...,ϕ n and ϕ0,ϕ1,ϕ2 .... respectively. The main result says that for sufficiently small λ there are constantsC〉0 and 0〈q〈1 with ‖f n -f *‖≤Cq n . This result is closely related to certain infinite matricesA=(a jk ) with the property: (*) there exists anm〉0 such thata jk =0 for |j-k|〉m. The result is applied to infinite systems of linear equationsAf=0 andAf=g, whereA is a matrix with property (*), whose diagonals satisfy certain growth conditions.

Notes: Abstract In this paper, the first of a bipartite work, we consider an abstract, nonautonomous system of evolution equations of hyperbolic type, related to semilinear wave equations. Theorem 1 states that under certain assumptions the system admits a global center manifold, or equivalently a global decoupling function which is continuously differentiable with respect to its arguments, among which timet occurs. The difficult proof is presented in part II, i.e. the continuation of the present paper. For purposes of applications a local version of Theorem 1 is proved, i.e. the local center manifold Theorem 2. We obtain a series of applications both to abstract, nonautonomous wave equations and to concrete nonautonomous, semilinear wave equations subject to Neumann and Dirichlet boundary conditions.

Notes: Abstract. We consider semilinear parabolic equations on unbounded domains in $ \Bbb R^2 $ or $ \Bbb R^3 $ with forcing polynomial nonlinearities of the form g (u) = au p + bu p + 1··· with a≥ 0 and p≥ 2. It is shown that the zero solution of the induced semiflow is positively unstable, provided p = 2 and the domain contains arbitrarily large spheres. If p≥ 2 and if g possesses a positive root, then the zero solution is positively stable.

    Notes: Abstract Let Ω be a topological space,S t ∈ R (R the reals) a homeomorphism group on Ω andμ a Borel measure invariant with respect toS t , (μ(Ω)=1); forP ∈Ω putS t (P)=P t . Assumef ∈L 2(Ω,μ); according to E. Hopf there is for almost everyP ∈ Ω a well-determined spectral function σ(P,λ),λ ∈ R with lim $$T^{ - 1} \int_0^T {f(P_{t + s} )\overline {f(P_t )} dt = \int_{ - \infty }^{ + \infty } {e^{i\lambda s} d\sigma (P\lambda )} }$$ . The question to be considered is:*) if for a fixedP ∈ Ω we know the “past”f(P t ), t ≦ 0, is it then possible to compute (or “predict”) the future valuesf(P t ), t 〉 0? By using ideas from linear prediction theory we show that if $$\int_{ - \infty }^{ + \infty } {(1 + \lambda ^2 )\log \frac{d}{{d\lambda }}\sigma (P,\lambda )} d\lambda = - \infty$$ then the prediction required by*) is possible. An algorithm is described which accomplishes the prediction.

Notes: Abstract In this paper, the part II of a bipartite work, we present the proof of Theorem 1 which was stated in part I, i.e. the precursor of the present paper. This proof establishes the existence of a smooth center manifold, i.e. of a smooth decoupling function for the abstract evolution system considered in part I. In an appendix, the proofs of some auxiliary lemmas are presented, some of which were stated in part I, while the others are related to the present proof of Theorem 1.
