Notes: Summary Measurements of heart frequency during training, and of glucose, lactate, free fatty acids, glycerine, and triglyceride levels in the blood after training were made in horses in Mexico City (2250 m above sea level) over a period of 18 days: 1. In jumping horses heart frequencies of over 200/min were reached—simultaneously measured frequencies of riders did not exceed 140/min. During the period observed the heart frequencies remained roughly identical under increased stress, a result of adaptation to high altitude. 2. The blood lactate levels showed no changes during training, despite increased training intensity. This is made possible by successful adaptation of metabolism. 3. The behavior of free fatty acids, triglycerides and glycerine in the blood may be a result of increased utilisation of carbohydrate metabolites (glucose, lactate, pyruvate) and a decreased oxydation of fatty acids, which is favorable energetically.

Notes: Abstract The fact that yeast HSF1 is essential for survival under nonstress conditions can be used to test heterologous Hsfs for the ability to substitute for the endogenous protein. Our results demonstrate that like Hsf of Drosophila, tomato Hsfs A1 and A2 can functionally replace the corresponding yeast protein, but Hsf B1 cannot. In addition to survival at 28° C, we checked the transformed yeast strains for temperature sensitivity of growth, induced thermotolerance and activator function using two different lacZ reporter constructs. Tests with full-length Hsfs were supplemented by assays using mutant Hsfs lacking parts of their C-terminal activator region or oligomerization domain, or containing amino acid substitutions in the DNA-binding domain. Remarkably, results with the yeast system are basically similar to those obtained by the analysis of the same Hsfs as transcriptional activators in a tobacco protoplast assay. Most surprising is the failure of HsfB1 to substitute for the yeast Hsf. The defect can be overcome by addition to HsfB1 of a short C-terminal peptide motif from HsfA2 (34 amino acid residues), which represents a type of minimal activator necessary for interaction with the yeast transcription apparatus. Deletion of the oligomerization domain (HR-A/B) does not interfere with Hsf function for survival or growth at higher temperatures. But monomeric Hsf has a markedly reduced affinity for DNA, as shown by lacZ reporter and band-shift assays.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Es wird über telemetrische Messungen in Mexico City (2250 m ü.
Notes: Summary Telemetric measurements of runners, rowers, and cyclists in Mexico City (2250 m above sea level) are reported: 1. The heart frequency shows similar increases and changes to sea level. 2. The heart frequency during training lies slightly above the values measured in the laboratory during ergometric work. As far as heart frequence is concerned, the ergometric values may thus be compared with the training values. 3. No indications of damage due to high altitude conditions in Mexico City were found. 4. The intensity and length of the exercise performed have a limited influence on the level of heart frequency.
