Description / Table of Contents:
Summary Additions of thermoplastics (cellulose acetate butyrate, polyvinyl acetate, polystyrene, etc.) to UP resins yield thermosetting moulding compounds with a negligible tendency to shrink while curing. Earlier reports (14, 17) discuss the mechanisms of shrinkage compensation, using both laboratory-prepared specimens and systems for practical use. The following investigations are concerned with the demonstration and interpretation of the various surface defects of properly produced LP mouldings. Electron micrographs are used to discuss the influence of the different thermoplastics on the type of surface defect. Microprobe investigations permits a distinct correlation between the chemical nature of the individual material components and the electron optical appearance. Using the universal scattering function allows a definite relationship between the structure of the voids in LP mouldings and optical scattering processes. A systematic classification of the different surface defects on mouldings from LP-UP resin — based on morphological findings — is introduced. For the first time a relationship is given between the phenomenological appearance and the physical processes while curing.
Notes:
