    Notes: We describe the current status of tunable, cw, solid-state lasers in the infrared region of the spectrum which may be tuned to the helium resonance transition near 1083 nm. The principal use for these laser devices is the optical pumping of 3He and 4He atoms via the 23S1 metastable state. The tunable lasers we have examined include Nd3+-doped YAlO3, LaxNd1−xMgAl11O19 (x ∼0.15), Nd:LiNbO3, and Nd:silica glass fibers. Power outputs from these lasers range from a milliwatt to more than 1 W at the helium transition. Laser emission bandwidths range from less than 40 MHz (single-mode operation) to several GHz. Applications include magnetometry, dense nuclear targets, and polarized electron beams.

    Notes: An LNA (Nd-doped lanthanum-hexaluminate) crystal has been pumped with a cw, krypton arc lamp in a commercial Nd:YAG cavity. The cw output power greater than 6 W is obtained in a 28-cm long, plane mirror cavity. The free-running wavelength is near 1083 nm and has a width of about 0.8 nm. Inserting a 0.25 mm thick, uncoated solid etalon in the cavity permits the laser output to be continuously tuned from 1082 to 1084 nm by tilting the etalon. The laser bandwidth is reduced to below 0.016 nm. Over 3 W are obtained at the helium resonance transition. The maximum power output is limited by severe thermal lensing effects in the LNA crystal. The single, arc-lamp pump is operated at less than 70% of its maximum rated current; thus, substantial increases in the power output can be expected if crystal quality can be improved.

    Notes: We have developed a high-density source of metastable neon and have selectively quenched both metastable species using a standing-wave dye laser. The source is compact, stable, and produces an average intensity of 3.6×1014 sr−1 s−1 and a density on target of 7.7×106 cm−3.

    Notes: We have observed Hanle signals and n=0, p=1 parametric resonances of 23S1 metastable helium atoms in a discharge cell by optically pumping the helium atoms with a tunable Nd:LNA laser. These resonances were used to construct a sensitive magnetometer for the measurement of very small magnetic fields. Since magnetometer sensitivity is proportional to the slope of the parametric resonance signal (signal amplitude divided by linewidth), the slopes for single-line laser pumping were compared with similar quantities obtained from conventional helium lamp pumping. Laser pumping yielded 45 times greater slopes with comparable power requirements, thus establishing the potential for developing ultrasensitive resonance magnetometers using single-line laser pumping.

    Notes: Several Nd:YAP lasers were constructed which could be broadly tuned in the 1083-nm region which includes the helium 23S-23P transition, using a Lyot filter and thin, uncoated etalons within the laser cavity. 1 W of power could be extracted at 1083 nm through a 1% transmitting output coupler. This laser beam was used to optically pump metastable 4He and 3He 23S helium atoms in a weak discharge cell, spin polarizing the metastable ensemble. In a 3He cell the polarization is transferred to the nuclear spin system. A 3He target cell at 0.3 Torr was polarized to 52% in a few minutes. We describe the application of this system to the design of polarized targets for experiments in nuclear physics.

    Notes: We describe and compare three methods we have used to stabilize the frequency of an end-pumped, tunable La0.85Nd0.15MgAl11O19 (LNA) laser to the absorption lines of 4He or 3He near 1083 nm. The first two methods vary the thickness of an intracavity étalon which is used for tuning and narrow banding of the laser output. The third method varies the length of the laser cavity. All three methods yield satisfactory stabilization of the laser frequency although controlling the tilt angle of a solid étalon is the simplest and most reliable method.
