Notes:
Summary Chlorothricin, a new macrolide-type antibiotic, inhibits growth of the gram-positive organism, Bacillus subtilis, on chemically defined media with glucose or pyruvate as sole carbon source. Acetate has an antagonizing effect on the action of this antibiotic, but the inhibition is not completely overcome. On a medium with asparagine or aspartate, respectively, chlorothricin affects growth only at higher concentrations. In vivo 14CO2 incorporation experiments show that chlorothricin inhibits the anaplerotic CO2 fixation catalyzed by pyruvate carboxylase (EC 6.4.1.1.).
