Checking the methods for preparing the „γ-Mn2O3“, it has been found that this tetragonally distorted spinel phase is, contrary to its designation „γ-Mn2O3“, existent only at oxidation states from MnO1.33 to MnO1.40. Above MnO1.40, on wet oxidation a new phase, 2 MnO2 · Mn(OH)2, formed occurring as the pure phase at MnO1.60-1.66.

Bei kritischer experimenteller Nachprüfung der bisher bekannten Methoden zur Herstellung des „γ-Mn2O3“ auf nassem und trockenem Wege zeigte sich, daß ein Oxydationsgrad höher als MnO1,40 zum Verschwinden der tetragonal verzerrten Spinellphase führt. Da diese demnach nur bei Oxydationsgraden entsprechend MnO1,33 bis MnO1,40 beständig ist, erscheint die Bezeichnung „γ-Mn2O3“ nicht gerechtfertigt. Die bei naßchemischer Oxydation oberhalb MnO1,40 auftretende neue Phase ist bei einem Oxydationsgrad entsprechend MnO1,60—MnO1,66 phasenrein und kann als 2 MnO2 · Mn(OH)2 formuliert werden.
