Abstract The chronic alcoholics admitted after recent heavy ethanol intake were studied by acid infusion to test gastric mucosal integrity. Results were compared to a group of control patients. In addition, gastroscopic examinations were done on all of the alcoholic group. Results indicate that 24 to 72 hours after ethanol ingestion, the response of the mucosal barrier to acid instillation in chronic alcoholics is similar to that in the control group. There is no evidence of increased back-diffusion. Gastroscopy revealed only minor mucosal changes in 4 of the 10 patients.
