Notes: During recent years several attempts have been undertaken to decrease the period length of undulators to the millimetre range. In this paper a novel type of in-vacuum undulator is described which is built using superconductive wires. The period length of this special device is 3.8 mm. In principle, it is possible to decrease this period length even further. A 100-period-long undulator has been built and will be tested with a beam in the near future.

Notes: Summary The diagnosis of Spondylodiscitis after lumbar disc surgery has been based so far on clinical abnormalities, non-specific changes in chemical laboratory parameters [erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), C-reactive protein (CRP)] and radiological examinations such as MRI. Such techniques do not enable any clear diagnosis to be made before the 3rd postoperative week. The PMN elastase released from stimulated polymorphonuclear granulocytes has been proved to be a good laboratory parameter by which it is possible to prognosticate bacterial and abacterial organ complications in surgical patients with a high degree of probability. Under investigation were 12 patients with Spondylodiscitis out of 1162 operations on herniated lumbar discs. PMN elastase was determined on the 7th postoperative day. In patients with Spondylodiscitis and a mean value of 110.5 μg/l, the elastase was on average higher by a factor of 2.6 as compared to 88 randomly selected control patients. Since Spondylodiscitis is a rare complication, this results in a positive value of only 7%, which does not allow a reliable diagnosis of Spondylodiscitis by the elastase assay. But because the negative predictive value is 100%, it is possible to exclude a postoperative Spondylodiscitis already on the 7th postoperative day, if the elastase value is normal.

Notes: Tribological investigations of self-mated physical vapour deposition (PVD) coatings have shown in part very low friction in humid air and a strong dependence of the tribological behaviour on the relative humidity during the test. This behaviour can be interpreted in terms of the growth of surface layers, which act as solid lubricants and reduce friction and wear considerably. The use of surface sensitive analytical methods like SEM, XPS and AES for getting more information about this kind of surface layer, however, can have an adverse effect on these layers because of the necessary vacuum conditions. Therefore, atomic force microscopy (AFM) and lateral force microscopy (LFM) were used to study the topographical changes of two different PVD coatings under the influence of humidity. The aim of this work was to verify and to explain the well-examined macroscopic behaviour of two different engineering coatings on a microscopic scale. Because of the spatial resolution of the LFM technique it is possible to discern species with a different frictional behaviour on the same surface. This allows the beginning of (tribo)chemical reactions to be detected locally in contrast to conventional integrating tribological testing. Depending on the chemical nature of the PVD coatings and the stock holding period in certain environments, topographical changes can be detected by means of AFM/LFM. Under humid conditions small hillocks (droplets) begin to grow on TiN surfaces, the number and size of these hillocks depending on the duration of stock holding. On CrN surfaces this hillock formation does not occur even after extended storage for several weeks in humid air.
