Summary In general, the moduli of elasticity of polymer solids are functions of time and deformation. The range of this function of time is limited by a static and a dynamic modulus. The change with increasing elongation of stretched polyamide-6 filaments is followed up for these limits — obtained from relaxation tests with stopped elongation and from sound propagation during elongation — as well as for a modulus with medium rate of elongation obtained from differentiation of the stress-strain curve. Here the dynamic modulus of elasticity yields a measure of the mean molecular orientation in the specimen while the static modulus of elasticity gives information about (physical) crosslinking between the macromolecules. During elongation the dynamic limit of the modulus monotonously rises up to very high levels, indicating an increase in the molecular orientation especially within the noncrystalline regions. This orientation is largely reversible with elongation, and thus explains the relatively elastic extensibility of the polyamide filament. — For finite strain times the differential modulus shows a clear maximum with medium elongations. Up to this range elongations are practically reversible despite a time lag; true permanent deformations combined with an irreversible change of the stress-strain diagram only occur above this range. —The characteristic maximum of the modulus results from a superposition of orienting processes within the noncrystalline parts and sliding of crystal lattice planes. The sliding loosens the network of crystallites so far that permanent deformations occur. Therewith the intercrystalline molecular segments are homogenized.
