Notes:
Summary The organum vasculosum laminae terminalis may be divided into two zones: the external zone borders on the cisterna praechiasmatica and contains numerous astrocytic processes; the internal zone contains many perikarya and bulges into the 3rd ventricle forming “bulbous protrusions”. The organ is characterized by a special vascular arrangement: At the boundary between the cisterna and the external zone a branch of the preoptic artery ramifies into a plexus with only small lateral extension. From here afferent vessels providing terminal loops take their origin. In the median part they penetrate into the internal zone, some of them reaching the bulbous protrusions. The drainage takes place in a corresponding venous plexus; the blood finally flows out in a branch of the preoptic vein. Altogether the afferent and efferent vessels as well as a part of the terminal loops form a median wedge of vascular tissue (“Gefäßstraße”) running from the cisterna to the ventricle. — The fine structure of the branches of the preoptic artery and vein is described. In the cisterna praechiasmatica thin-walled venules and the loose web of arachnoid are found; near the external zone the narrow, occasionally interrupted layer of pial cells is located. By means of deep, finger-like invaginations the cerebrospinal fluid enters the space between astrocytic processes of the external zone. — The various constituents within the “Gefäßstraße” are mingled in a very complex manner; therefore in ultrathin sections the different tracts in general cannot be identified. In some adventitial cells the cisternae of the endoplasmic reticulum contain a substance of medium electron density; sometimes also dense spherical bodies occur. Occasionally microglia cells are found containing disintegrated material looking like myelin figures. In some places the “Gefäßstraße” displays extended extracellular spaces; some astrocytic processes surrounded by a basement membrane protrude into these spaces. The basement membrane bordering on the “Gefäßstraße” is interrupted by holes, through which processes of glial and neuronal cells intrude into the interior. Axonal endings within the “Gefäßstraße” often contain secretory granules with average diameters of 780 or 1730 Å; discharged granules are also found. — Many terminal vessels leave the “Gefäßstraße” and are located freely in the internal zone. Four groups of vascular loops can be distinguished on the basis of their structure; all of them are surrounded by perivascular spaces. Group I has a narrow perivascular space containing many collagen fibrils. (There are capillaries of the same structure in the external zone.) We suppose them to be nutritive vessels. The perivascular space of group II is wider, filled with numerous adventitial cells and ramifies fs into the neuropil. Apart from thin endothelial cells with cytopemptic vesicles, the vessels of group III possess perivascular spaces with features that seem in favor of an optimal exchange: they are considerably distended, their outer surface is enlarged by numerous ramifications into the neuropil, and they are filled with an amorphous substance. The vessels of group IV mainly found within the bulbous protrusions — are lined by a very thin, fenestrated endothelium; they are located in an extremely widened perivascular lake which has a rather smooth outer surface. Within the clear lake only a few adventitial cells with very long, thin branches occur. Between the liquid content of the perivascular lakes and the cerebrospinal fluid of the 3rd ventricle there exists only a thin layer of tissue (minimum 1 μ): the ependyma is considerably flattened; a thin felt of glial processes containing fine nerve processes lies beneath the ependyma. A special, possibly receptive function of these vessels may be supposed on the strength of this arrangement. — The observations are discussed in detail.
