    Notes: The rate of isomerization of allyl isocyanide to allyl cyanide is monitored using Stern–Volmer kinetics when various features of the 5–0 and 6–0 C–H overtone stretch region are excited. Previously, Reddy and Berry found that the isomerization rates varied from band to band and that the variations were not monotonic with excitation energy. They attributed this behavior to nonstatistical effects. It is found in this study that the isomerization rates vary within an overtone band by up to a factor of 1.8, in addition to the variations from band to band seen previously. This observation rules out the possibility that the overtone bands are purely lifetime broadened. In addition, the photoisomerization rate increases with increasing temperature. An increase of 60 K increases the photolysis yield in the 5–0 C–H region by a factor of 3–4, while increases in the 6–0 C–H region are smaller, 25%–60%. These effects can be qualitatively explained if the overtone spectrum of allyl isocyanide is inhomogeneously broadened because of the presence of vibrational "hot bands.'' In this case, molecules excited by the photolysis laser will have varying amounts of initial thermal energy depending on where the laser is tuned within a band. A simple model for the effects of hot bands on the isomerization rate is in good agreement with experimental results. It is not necessary to invoke nonstatistical effects in order to explain the observed overtone-pumped isomerization rates of allyl isocyanide.

    Notes: The combined use of the new technologies of multiphoton-based intravital imaging, the chemotaxis-mediated collection of invasive cells, and high sensitivity expression profiling has allowed the correlation of the behavior of invasive tumor cells in vivo with their gene expression patterns. New insights have resulted including a gene expression signature for invasive cells and the tumor microenvironment invasion model. This model proposes that tumor invasion and metastasis can be studied as a problem resembling normal morphogenesis. We discuss how these new insights may lead to a better understanding of the molecular basis of the invasive behavior of tumor cells in vivo, which may result in new strategies for the diagnosis and treatment of metastasis.

    Notes: The recombinative desorption of H2 from Ge(100)–(2×1) is studied by temperature programed desorption (TPD) and laser-induced desorption (LID). In contrast to what is observed for the Si(100)–(2×1) surface, the TPD spectra for Ge(100) do not appear to show appreciable formation of a stable dihydride species. Both the TPD and LID results are consistent with the first-order recombinative desorption kinetics. Analysis of the LID results yield an activation energy, Ea=40±2 kcal/mol and preexponential factor, ν=4×1013±1 s−1. The results are discussed in terms of several mechanisms that have been proposed for the first-order recombinative desorption of hydrogen from Si(100)–(2×1). © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Summary Amoeboid movement, and in some cases, amoeboid chemotaxis, is a key step in tumor metastasis. The high degree of conservation in signal transduction pathways and motile machinery in eukaryotic cells suggests that insights and molecular probes developed from the study of these processes in easily manipulated experimental model systems will be applicable directly to experimentally intractable tumor cells. One such model system, Dictyostelium discoideum, is discussed in terms of the molecular events involved in amoeboid chemotaxis. The application of insights and assays developed with Dictyostelium to early events in the chemotaxis of Lewis lung carcinoma cells is reviewed.
