Abstract Some of the complications associated with the use of transpedicular screws for spinal fusions include the large diameters of the screws and screw breakagein vivo. Recent advances in multidisciplinary design optimization techniques have provided a unique approach to incorporate the structural, biological, and manufacturing disciplines involved in the design process of spinal screws, allowing the development of smaller and safer transpedicular screws.
