    Notes: Recently a paradox has been posed that appears to challenge the second law of thermodynamics in a plasma blackbody environment [D. P. Sheehan, Phys. Plasmas 2, 1893 (1995)]. In this paper another, related paradox is posed in an unmagnetized Q plasma. Laboratory experiments simulating some necessary conditions for the paradoxical system corroborate theoretical predictions and fail to resolve the paradox in favor of the second law. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A paradox has been posed that challenges the second law of thermodynamics in a plasma blackbody environment [D. P. Sheehan, Phys. Plasmas 2, 1893 (1995)]. Laboratory experiments testing critical aspects of the paradox have supported theoretical predictions and have failed to resolve the paradox in favor of the second law. In this article, the paradox is sharpened and expanded in scope by identifying the crux of the paradox and the general requirements for second law violation. It is found that for an electrically conducting probe immersed in a blackbody plasma and connected to ground through a load, the general requirement for second law violation is Vf≠0, where Vf is the plasma floating potential. This requirement can be met by many natural and manmade plasmas. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A simple, versatile device for dispersing micrometer- and submicrometer-sized particles in vacuum is described. The source allows control of particle size (0.5 μm≤l≤200 μm) and particle flux density up to roughly 107 cm−2 s−1. Several types of microparticles were successfully dispersed.

    Notes: Ion acceleration and anomalous transport were studied experimentally in the near wake region of an electrically floating disk limiter immersed in two different types of collisionless, supersonically flowing, magnetized plasmas: the first initially quiescent, the second initially turbulent. Ion densities and velocity distributions were obtained using a nonperturbing laser induced fluorescence diagnostic. Large-amplitude, low-frequency turbulence was observed at the obstacle edge and in the wake. Rapid ion and electron configuration space transport and ion velocity space transport were observed. Configuration space and velocity space transport were similar for both quiescent and turbulent plasma-obstacle systems, suggesting that plasma-obstacle effects outweigh the effects of initial plasma turbulence levels. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A simple, compact source of low-temperature, spatially and temporally uniform air plasma using a Telsa induction coil driver is described. The low-power ionization discharge plasma is localized (2 cm×0.5 cm×0.1 cm) and essentially free of arc channels. A Teflon coated rolling cylindrical electrode and dielectric coated ground plate are essential to the source's operation and allow flat test samples to be readily exposed to the plasma. The plasma is a copious source of ozone and nitrogen oxides. Its effects on various microbes are discussed. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Laser induced fluorescence (LIF) diagnostic techniques1–3 allow investigation of diverse plasma phenomena. LIF techniques will be discussed in the context of a series of experiments carried out at UCI including: (1) phase space reconstructions of ion response to electron and ion beam generated modes,4,5 ion acceleration and anomalous transport in the near wake of plasma-obstacle systems, (2) optical tomographic techniques2 applied to ion acceleration in velocity space,6 and (3) optical tagging techniques used to quantitatively assess classical and turbulent models of cross-field particle diffusion.7 This work was supported by NSF Grants #PHY-8606081 and #ATM-8411189.
