Notes: SUMMARY: Highly crosslinked poly(styrene/DVB) beads have been synthesised by suspension polymerisation using different porogens and porogens mixtures. The porosity of the resulting resins was analysed by the nitrogen and mercury intrusion porosimetry techniques.

Notes: Abstract The aggregation and air-water interface properties of a three-legged tentacle molecule tris (11-pyridinium undec-1-yl)benzene-1, 3, 5-tricarboxylate tribromide have been investigated by measurement of the molar conductance, λ, and equilibrium surface tensin,γ, over a wide range of bulk concentration (8×10−6 − 0.3 M). In contrast to the single chain analogue, dodecyl pyridinium bromide, DDPB, the tentacle species shows no evidence for a conventional micellar transition in solutions up to 100 fold more concentrated than the critical micelle concentration of DDPB, though aggregation of small numbers of molecules cannot be excluded. The conductance behaviour suggests the occurrence of ion-pair (or higher) equilibria, which are likely to complicate the interpretation of the data. Also, in contrast to a previous tentacle molecule described in the literature, the present species is significantly surface active, and in the high concentration limit reducesγ to 〈30 mNm−1, significantly lower than the values obtained for simple ionic amphiphiles. In this region the tentacle species seems to stand like a ‘tripod’ at the water-air interface with both its hydrocarbon legs and its aromatic body lifted clear of the water surface. At much lower concentrations two small plateau regions inγ are apparent (∼ 60 and 52 mNm−1). Here, the tentacle molecule occupies a much larger surface area, and seems to adopt a crab-like crouch with its aromatic body and polar ester substituents lowered into the water surface.

Notes: Abstract  A variety of nonionic reactive surfactants have been prepared from block copolymer precursors. These precursors are formed from a commercially available polyoxyethylene glycol monomethylether as the hydrophilic sequence of the surfactant; this product is used as initiator of ring opening anionic polymerization of butylene oxide. Finally the reactive surfactants are obtained after proper functionalization of the precursor. The reactive surfactants are an inisurf with an asymmetric azo compound, a transurf with a thiol group, and a few surfmers with acrylic, methacrylic, styrenic and α-methyl styrenic reactive groups. These compounds have been engaged in styrene emulsion or dispersion polymerization. Several of them have been found to be useful for preparing stable latices.

Notes: Abstract The formation of the interconnected morphology of open-cell styrene/divinylbenzene (DVB) PolyHIPE copolymers has been studied by scanning electron microscopy on frozen HIPE samples at different stages of polymerisation, a technique known as cryo-SEM. The transition from discrete emulsion droplets to interconnected cells was observed to occur around the gelpoint of the polymerising system. This would suggest that the formation of holes between adjacent cells is due to the contraction of the thin monomeric films on conversion of monomer to polymer, as a result of the higher density of the latter.

Notes: Some new vinyl derivatives of cellulose have been synthesized under anhydrous conditions using potassium cellulosate. The unsaturated groups were introduced by esterification with acryloyl chloride and by etherification with vinylbenzyl chloride or via 5-chloromethylsalicylaldyhyde derivatives. Levels of cellulose substitution of from ∼10-75% of glucose residues were achieved. Polystyrene was readily grafted onto all the derivatives via solution polymerization in toluene, using azobisisobutyronitrile as a thermal initiator. Weight fractions of styrene of up to ∼0.4 were readily obtained.

Notes: A number of particulate polyethylene and polypropylene based matrices have been γ -radiation grafted with poly(acryloylsarcosine methyl ester). The resulting composite materials have physicochemical properties attractive for use in continuous solid phase synthesis. Three macroporous polystyrene resins have also been impregnated with a secondary polyamide network using thermal initiation. All of these retain their rigid spherical structure and the composite properties again make them good candidates for use under pressure. One of these has been used in a preliminary solid phase experiment and two successive amino acid residues coupled with ∼100% yield.

Notes: A number of polystyrene resins of chromatographic quality (5-10 μm) have been prepared with significant residual double bond contents (∼ 2 mmol·g-1). These groups have been used as sites for the grafting of eight polar macromolecules in an attempt to produce a thin uniform coating of the resin surface. Three different grafting procedures have been examined and all products characterized in terms of their toluene and water imbibition. Materials showing promise as universal column packings for gel permeation chromatography have been synthesized on a larger scale and packed in tetrahydrofuran (THF) into standard columns. The plate count of each packed column has been evaluated, and the chromatographic performance of each assessed using polystyrene standards when the eluent was THF and polyethylene oxides when water and methanol were employed. The results are discussed in terms of some simple models describing the grafted resins.
