Notes: Objective  To evaluate the relations of intakes of soy, fat and other dietary components to premenstrual symptoms.Design  Cross sectional study.Setting  Three colleges and two nursing schools.Population  One hundred and eighty-nine Japanese women aged 19 to 34 years. Methods  Intakes of nutrients and foods, including soy products and isoflavones, were estimated by a semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire. Change in menstrual cycle symptoms were assessed by the Moos Menstrual Distress Questionnaire (MDQ).Main outcome measures  Spearman rank correlation of soy and other dietary factors with changes in MDQ scores between the follicular and the premenstrual phases after controlling for age, marital status, exercise, smoking status, age at menarche and number of days of bleeding. Results  Neither soy product nor isoflavone intake was significantly associated with change in MDQ score in the premenstrual phase. Intakes of total, saturated and monounsaturated fats were significantly correlated with change in scores for total MDQ and subscale ‘pain’ in the premenstrual phase after controlling for the covariates. Intake of cereals/potatoes/starches was significantly inversely correlated with a change in total MDQ score in the premenstrual phase. Conclusions  High intake of fats and low intake of foods with high concentration of carbohydrate may be associated with premenstrual symptoms.

Notes: Aims. To estimate the life-time prevalence rate of tobacco/nicotine dependence and demographic variables and smoking habits associated with the disorder in male ever-smokers in Japan. Design. A cross-sectional community-based interview study. Setting. Takayama city, Gifu Prefecture, Japan. Participants. A total of 170 male ever-smokers aged 35 years or older selected randomly from a community in Japan were interviewed. The response rate was 85%. Measurements. The WHO Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI) was used to make diagnoses of tobacco/nicotine dependence according to ICD-10, DSM-III-R and DSM-IV. The Fagerstrom Tolerance Questionnaire (FTQ) was also administered and those who had a FTQ score of 7 or above were identified. Findings. The life-time prevalence rates of tobacco/nicotine dependence in male ever-smokers were 42%, 26% and 32% according to ICD-10, DSM-III-R and DSM-IV criteria, respectively; 19% had a FTQ score of 7 or above. The ICD-10 diagnosis was significantly and negatively associated with quitting smoking ( p 0.05). Multiple logistic regression analyses indicated that number of cigarettes per day when they smoked the most was significantly associated with higher life-time risks of the disorder according to DSM-III-R, DSM-IV and Fagerstrom's classification ( p 0.05). The length of cigarette smoked was associated with higher life-time risks of ICD-10 and DSM-IV diagnoses, and years of smoking were associated with higher life-time risks of ICD-10, DSM-III-R and DSM-IV diagnoses ( p 0.05). Younger birth cohorts had higher cumulative rates of the disorder according to DSM-IV ( p for trend 0.05). Conclusions. Life-time prevalence rates of tobacco/nicotine dependence according to ICD-10, DSM-III-R and DSM-IV in male ever-smokers in Japan were within the range of rates reported in previous US studies; rates of FTQ score of 7 or above were lower. Fagerstrom scores and diagnostic criteria appear to reflect different aspects of dependence.

Notes: [Auszug] The brain hypothalamus contains certain secreted molecules that are important in regulating feeding behaviour. Here we show that nesfatin, corresponding to NEFA/nucleobindin2 (NUCB2), a secreted protein of unknown function, is expressed in the appetite-control hypothalamic nuclei in rats. ...

Notes: The crystallization and preliminary crystallographic study of phycocyanin from the thermophilic cyanobacterium Synechococcus elongatus is reported. Phycocyanin is composed of α- and β-subunits consisting of 162 and 172 amino-acid residues, respectively. These associate to form an αβ heterodimer, which further associates to give a ring-shaped trimer (αβ)3. Two trimers bind head-to-head to form a hexamer (αβ)6. Phycocyanin crystals have been obtained by the sitting-drop vapour-diffusion method with a precipitant solution containing 30%(w/v) PEG 4000 and 100 mM MES pH 7.5–8.0. Using synchrotron radiation, the crystals diffract to 2.0 Å resolution. They belong to the trigonal space group R32, with unit-cell parameters a = b = 186.75 (3), c = 59.75 (4) Å, α = β = 90, γ = 120°. Assuming that the crystallographic triad is identical to the threefold axis of the hexamer and with three (αβ)6 molecules in a unit cell, the calculated molar volume (VM) is 2.64 Å3 Da−1. This value corresponds to a solvent content of approximately 53%, with one αβ heterodimer occupying the asymmetric unit.

Notes: Abstract PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to examine the relationships between smoking and alcohol use and risk of colorectal adenoma. METHODS: Information about smoking, alcohol use, and other lifestyle variables were obtained prospectively from 14,427 male and 17,125 female residents in a city of Gifu Prefecture, Japan, by a self-administered questionnaire in September, 1992. Colorectal adenomas were newly diagnosed in 181 men and 78 women in this cohort between January, 1993 and December, 1995 by colonoscopic examination at two major hospitals of the city. Gender-specific and site-specific relative risks and 95 percent confidence intervals adjusted for age and for age plus other potential confounding factors were calculated by using logistic regression models. RESULTS: Thirty or more years of smoking was significantly associated with risk of adenoma in general compared with never having smoked in both men and women (relative risk, 1.60; 95 percent confidence interval, 1.02–2.62 and relative risk, 4.54; 95 percent confidence interval, 2.04–9.08, respectively). Effect of smoking was stronger in the proximal colon. After adjusting for age and carbohydrate intake, total alcohol intake was not associated with risk of adenoma in any site in the colon in men. Sake drinkers were at significantly increased risk of adenoma in general, but the dose-response relationship was not statistically significant. Risk of adenoma in the rectum was not significantly increased for those who consumed 〉30.3 g/day of ethanol (relative risk, 5.7). CONCLUSION: These data suggest that smoking is a risk factor of adenoma in Japanese men and women. The role of alcohol, however, is less clear.

Notes: Abstract The effectiveness of the intraperitoneal administration of cis-diamminedichloroplatinum (II) (DDP) on peritoneal carcinomatosis caused by gastric cancers was evaluated. Seventeen patients were treated with one of three protocols, consisting of the intraperitoneal injection (ip) of DDP at doses of 70 and 110 mg/m2, with or without sodium thiosulfate (STS) rescue. The area under the curve (AUC) of DDP for sufficient anticancer activities against cultured human cell lines in vitro was estimated at 240 μg h/ml, which was equivalent to the AUC gained by 110 mg/m2 ip DDP in the clinical studies. The cytotoxic activity of DDP was reduced by approximately 50% with 100-fold STS in the AUC in the experimental studies. However, this was achieved only in urine, and not in either the peritoneal cavity or in plasma in the clinical studies. Three cases of a partial response against peritoneal carcinomatosis were seen from a total of four evaluable cases treated with 110 mg/m2 DDP, and no renal toxicities were observed in those treated with the STS rescue. The results of this study led us to conclude that high-dose ip DDP treatment combined with the STS rescue would be useful chemotherapy against peritoneal carcinomatosis caused by gastric cancers.

Notes: Abstract Background We investigated the efficacy and safety of granisetron in 40 pediatric oncology patients who received identical chemotherapy regimens for three courses. Methods During the first course, the emetogenicity of each chemotherapy regimen was evaluated without granisetron. Next patients received one of two doses of intravenous granisetron, i.e. 20 or 40 mcg/kg during the second and third course of chemotherapy in a cross-over fashion. Results Out of the 40 patients, two children had no emetic episode during the 24 hour period following commencement of the first course of chemotherapy. Whereas, 23 patients receiving 20 μ/kg granisetron, and 22 patients receiving 40 μ/kg, obtained complete response (no emetic episode during the 24 hour period following commencement of chemotherapy) in the second or third course. When patients received 20 or 40 μ/kg of granisetron, all measured efficacy parameters were superior in comparison to the period when they were receiving no granisetron. There was no significant difference in the antiemetic effect between the two doses of granisetron. However, a dose-related improvement in efficacy was observed with granisetron in a certain subset of patients; that is, 4 of the 10 patients receiving 20 μ/kg, who had responded poorly with respect to nausea and vomiting, showed a complete or major response when the dose was increased to 40 μ/kg. One child developed somnolence. No other adverse events were observed. Conclusion Granisetron is an effective and safe antiemetic for children receiving intensive chemotherapy regimens containing cisplatin, cyclophosphamide or methotrexate. When comparing the two doses of 20 and 40 μ/kg, 40 μ/kg appeared more effective; although the difference was not statistically significant.

Notes: The purpose of this study is to examine the basic characteristics of the single layer type microwaveabsorber in X band. Samples were produced from Bi system (2223) superconductor powder andmetallic powder and inserted into a wave guide system where the complex reflection intensity wasmeasured (The short circuit method) by using the vector network analyzer[1].As the result, at the room temperature (300K), the reflection loss is apt to increase with increasingthe content of the Bi system superconductor powder. Furthermore, the measured value of thereflection loss agreed with the value calculated from the complex permittivity εr* .At liquid nitrogen temperature (77K) where the superconductor powders are in the superconductingstate, some differences occurred between the calculated value and the measured one of the reflectionloss. For the metallic powders, copper powder showed good agreement between the calculated and themeasured of reflection loss. For the magnetic material, it was concluded that the theoretical formula under consideration ofcomplex permeability μr* should be derivated

Notes: We report an effective substitution of aluminum for gallium in langasite-type La3Ta0.5Ga5.5O14(LTG) crystals for use in a pressure sensor at high temperature. Al-substituted LTG(La3Ta0.5Ga5.5-xAlxO14; LTGAx) single crystals up to the solubility limit of x=0.5 have been grownby the conventional Czochralski technique. The electric properties of the LTGAx crystals wereinvestigated and compared with those of LTG. By Al substitution, the piezoelectric constant d11 andthe electromechanical coupling factors (k12) became slightly larger. The LTGAx crystals showed alower temperature dependence of d11 and a higher electric resistivity ρ than those of the LTGcrystals

Notes: In the study of the application of a laser technique on the bulk of press formed Bi system, theauthors have reported that a superconductive layer can be obtained underneath the laser melted layer. In a continuing series of this study, this paper deals with the mechanical properties of the bulk lasertreated. Superconductive powder of Bi system, 2223 phase was pressed to form a disk specimen of2 mm thick and 10 mm at 29 MPa to 196 MPa. Then a CO2 laser beam of output power 6 W to 9 Wwas scanned linearly in air to melt the surface of the specimen to be subjected to the evaluation ofhardness and fracture strength. The experimental results showed that the values of microvickershardness of superconductive layer and melted layer are 135 and 105 respectively while that of thespecimen as press formed is as low as 45. The fracture strength of the laser treated specimen wasincreased to 34 N from 15 N. The mechanical properties obtained deserve non sensitive handling ina practical use of the treated bulk
